Scotland Women Edged Out By England After Hard Fought Battle

The stage was set for the final match of the three-game warm-up series as Scotland took to the pitch against England, with Charlotte Watson getting proceedings underway. The Scots moved the ball confidently in the opening exchanges, as Amy Costello, Sarah Robertson and Sarah Jamieson combined well down the left-hand side to create early momentum.

Both sides applied consistent pressure throughout a closely contested opening quarter, with Scotland’s defence standing firm to deny England any clear attacking opportunities. Amy Costello was particularly influential at the back, making key interventions to halt England’s advances as the teams remained evenly matched heading into the second quarter.

Scotland began the second quarter with renewed intensity, bringing energy to the contest and looking to dictate play. Costello was instrumental in building attacks from deep, repeatedly firing accurate passes through the midfield to repeatably breaking England’s press and launched promising attacks.

England responded with a sustained spell of pressure, but Scotland’s defence remained resolute. Jess Buchanan was called into action during a sustained England attack, making an excellent save to keep the contest level. Costello and Birch then reacted well to clear the loose ball and relieve the pressure.

There was little to separate the two sides throughout the opening half, with neither able to convert their chances as the contest remained scoreless at the break.

England began the second half on the front foot, circulating possession well across the backline, but Scotland’s disciplined defensive structure ensured the deadlock remained intact. With neither side able to earn a penalty corner, opportunities continued to be limited in a tightly contested affair.

Scotland defended strong against England’s sustained press, working the ball confidently around the back to play out from defence and relieve the pressure. Much of the third quarter was battled out in midfield, with possession changing hands regularly as neither side was able to establish sustained control.

Katie Birch provided an attacking outlet down the left wing, carrying the ball forward to spark Scotland’s offence. The Scots came closest to breaking the deadlock in the closing moments of the quarter, producing a well-worked attacking move that forced a save from the England goalkeeper to keep the scores level heading into the final 15 minutes.

The final quarter burst into life as Scotland earned their first penalty corner of the match. Although the opportunity was well worked, England defended strongly to deny the breakthrough before quickly launching a counterattack from the hit-out. The move proved decisive, with England capitalising on the transition to score from a rebound and edge ahead 1-0.

Scotland responded positively despite England’s opener, continuing to search for an equaliser. Ava Findlay produced an impressive run down the right, beating her defender and earning a free hit just outside the circle as the intensity of the contest continued to rise.

At the other end, Katie Birch and Amy Costello combined well in defence to snuff out another dangerous England attack, while Sarah Robertson’s determination won Scotland a second penalty corner with just five minutes remaining. Costello’s drag flick was well saved, before Ellie Mackenzie drove forward down the left to create two further opportunities. Sarah Jamieson’s reverse-stick effort was denied, and moments later she was again kept out by the England goalkeeper as Scotland piled on the pressure.

Scotland continued to fight until the final whistle, with Costello delivering a series of searching passes to keep the momentum firmly with the visitors in the closing stages. Despite dominating possession and creating several late chances, Scotland were unable to find a way past England’s defence, as the hosts held on for a narrow 1-0 victory in the final match of the three-game warm-up series.

Scotland’s focus now shifts to Belgium, where they will face the World Cup hosts in two further warm-up matches at Belfius Hockey Arena. The fixtures offer an ideal opportunity to fine-tune preparations and gain valuable experience at the World Cup venue ahead of the start of the tournament next month.
