Victory for Scotland women over Malaysia in Peffermill
Scotland women 6-2 Malaysia women
An excellent goal scoring performance saw Scotland women beat Malaysia 6-2 in the first game of two at Peffermill. The games come as part of preparation for the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and The Netherlands, and Scotland’s first appearance in 24 years.
Malaysia burst forward from the push back but the Scotland defence promptly snuffed out the danger. After managing the early attack Scotland enjoyed good pressure throughout.
The first penalty corner went to Scotland and Amy Costello’s powerful effort skimmed the post.
Then a Katie Birch corner led to penalty stroke being awarded to Scotland, and Charlotte Watson expertly dispatched it into the roof of the net for 1-0.
The attacks kept coming and a swift burst down right opened Malaysia up and allowed Fiona Burnet to finish from close range and make it 2-0.
Into the second quarter and the Scotland pressure was constant. Ellie MacKenzie was causing problems and eventually added a third goal, smashing low for 3-0.
The goal was quickly followed by another low smash by Zara Kennedy for 4-0. As half time approached MacKenzie smashed low for 5-0 and her second of the contest.
The second half had Scotland press Malaysia back in their own half but there was a sting in the tail of the visiting team. A counter attack saw Nuramirah Zulkifli smash the ball into the bottom right corner for 5-1.
In the final quarter and an early Costello drag flack was saved on the line by the post player as the Scots searched for more goals.
Costello wouldn’t be denied for low and a low drag flick whizzed home to make it 6-1 for Scotland.
Malaysia kept coming when a counter attack opportunity was presented and were rewarded by a second goal when Khairunnisa Mohd found the net for 6-2 at the death of the contest.
The two meet again tomorrow for the second and final game of the series at 2pm at Peffermill.
