Scotland Men Win the EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers After Securing Victory Over Italy in the Final

Scotland Men defeated hosts Italy 3-1 in the EuroHockey Championship Quailifers final in Rome to claim the title, having already secured qualification to the 2027 EuroHockey Championships in London with Friday’s semi-final victory over Croatia.

Scotland men took on Italy in the final of the European Championship Qualifiers in Rome, looking to end a tournament full of excellent performances on a high.

Having secured their place at the 2027 EuroHockey Championships in London with a semi-final victory over Croatia on Friday, Neil Allan’s side had already achieved their primary objective of the week. Sunday’s final therefore presented an opportunity to finish the tournament with another positive result against the home nation.

Scotland controlled much of the possession in the first quarter with the pressure paying off eight minutes in when they earned the first penalty corner of the match.

Jamie Golden stepped up and unleashed a powerful drag flick that flew into the net to give Scotland a deserved 1-0 lead.

Italy responded quickly and found an equaliser three minutes later when Claudio Brocco scored for his side to make it 1-1.

Scotland continued to be threatening in attack and an excellent show of skill from Andrew McConnell won another penalty corner in the closing stages of the first quarter, but the Italian defence stood firm and kept the scores level.

The second quarter remained fiercely competitive with both teams creating numerous attacking opportunities. However, neither team was able to convert, and the sides headed into the half-time break locked at 1-1.

Scotland regained the lead just three minutes into the third quarter. Lee Morton delivered a ball into the circle and Struan Walker was on hand to apply the finishing touch, restoring Scotland’s advantage to 2-1.

The Scots struck again just a minute later when Cammy Golden reacted quickest to a rebound, firing the ball into the net to extend the lead to 3-1, giving Scotland firm control of the final.

Italy looked to comeback early in the final quarter with a penalty corner, but Jamie Golden slapped the ball clear and preserved his side’s two goal lead.

Scotland produced a superb defensive display throughout the entire last quarter, denying the hosts attempts to fight their way back into the contest on multiple occasions.

The closing stages of the final became increasingly dramatic. Italy’s Luciano Lanfranconi was shown a yellow card with two minutes remaining, giving Scotland a one-player advantage, before Joaquin Puglisi received a red card in the final seconds of the match.

Scotland saw out the remaining moments to secure a deserved 3-1 victory, sealing the EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers title in style.

Ali Richmond was named Player of the Match after an outstanding performance throughout the dominant Scotland display.

With qualification already secured, Scotland now look ahead to competing at the 2027 EuroHockey Championships in London next summer as European qualifier champions.
