Scotland U21 Women defeat Ireland in Glasgow

A sensational 5-3 victory for Scotland U21 Women saw them beat Ireland at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre. Both sides are building up to competing at the U21 EuroHockey Championship in Valencia, and the series offers high-quality preparation for both teams.

The first opportunity of the match fell for the visitors but it resulted in a Scotland goal. Ireland was awarded a penalty corner but a mis-trap, allowed Scotland to burst forward on a swift counter, and a Connie Roxburgh near post finish for 1-0.

Scotland’s pace and power down the left was a constant threat with Ava Graham and Ava Wadsworth connecting well and looking sharp.

The second quarter saw Scotland continue to edge the play but as half time approached it was Ireland’s turn to punish the Scots on the counter. A slick counter down the left saw the ball popped into the Scottish circle for a near post deflection, and an equaliser. 1-1.

Ireland then went 2-1 ahead with a goal that was a carbon copy of the Scotland opener. A penalty corner mis-trap allowed Ireland turn burst forward down the left and a near post finish gave Ireland the lead.

Cat Nelli struck back for Scotland as the home side carved Ireland open down the right, allowing Nelli to slam the ball into the bottom right corner for 2-2 on the cusp of half time.

The third quarter was end-to-end with both sides battling to take control. Mhairi Low came close to putting Scotland back in from with a lovely turn and shot that fizzed just wide of the left post.

It would be Ireland who would score next however and the goal came from an instinctive finish at a penalty corner rebound at the end of the quarter. 3-2.

Scotland equalised right at the start of the final quarter when Jess Garden swept the ball home from close range to make it 3-3.

As the game reached its conclusion Scotland took the lead again and it was Low who found the roof of the net from a tight angle, after injecting a penalty corner, to make it 4-3.

Moments later and the win was sealed when Lexie MacMillan forced the ball home from close range for 5-3, which was how the game ended.
