Scotland Finish Sixth at FIH Nations Cup Following Defeat to Malaysia
Scotland produced a spirited second-half comeback after goals from Golden and Nairn, but they ultimately fell to a 4-2 defeat against Malaysia in Cape Town.
Scotland rounded off their FIH Nations Cup campaign with a meeting against Malaysia in the 5th/6th place play-off, their sixth and final match of the tournament.
Having already faced Malaysia earlier in the competition, Scotland entered the contest determined to finish the week on a high and secure fifth place. Confidence was boosted by Friday’s dramatic victory over Ireland, with the Scots edging out their competitors in a sudden-death penalty shootout to book their place in the classification match.
Just two minutes into the first quarter, Malaysia were reduced to ten players after being shown a green card. Scotland looked to make the most of the advantage and enjoyed several promising attacking plays.
However, it was Malaysia who got on the scoresheet first. Eight minutes in they were awarded a penalty stroke and Faizal Saari scored from the opportunity to take his side 1-0 ahead.
Scotland responded positively and created a number of opportunities in front of the goal. Despite their attacking threat, they were unable to find the back of the net before the end of the first quarter, leaving Malaysia with a one-goal lead going into the second quarter.
Scotland suffered a further setback when Alisdair Richmond was shown a green card three minutes after the restart. Malaysia capitalised on the extra player with a score from Azari to extend their lead to 2-0.
Scotland continued to search for a goal to bring them back into the contest, showing plenty of determination throughout the remainder of the quarter but a combination of Malaysian defense and missed opportunities meant they were unable to find a score before half-time.
Scotland made the perfect start to the second half and reduced the deficit within two minutes of the restart. Winning a penalty corner, Jamie Golden stepped up and fired the ball into the net to make it 2-1.
The Scots continued to apply pressure and earned another penalty corner with seven minutes remaining in the quarter but were unable to convert. Just a minute later, Scotland were awarded yet another penalty corner, only to see the effort drift wide of the target.
Their persistence was eventually rewarded with just one minute left in the quarter when David Nairn levelled the scores at 2-2.
However, Malaysia responded immediately. With only seconds remaining in the quarter, they restored their one-goal advantage to take a 3-2 lead into the final fifteen minutes.
Malaysia looked to put the game beyond doubt early in the final quarter and won a penalty corner, but Scotland’s defence stood firm to keep the deficit at a single goal.
With ten minutes remaining, Malaysia were awarded a penalty stroke and this time Azrai converted successfully to score his second goal of the match and extend his side’s lead to 4-2.
Another Malaysian penalty corner followed but again proved unsuccessful, giving Scotland hope of a late comeback. Despite continuing to battle until the final whistle, the Scots were unable to find another goal and Malaysia held on to secure a 4-2 victory.
The result sees Scotland finish sixth overall at the FIH Nations Cup in Cape Town following an encouraging week of competition against high-quality international opposition.
While there will be disappointment at narrowly missing out on fifth place, there are plenty of positives for Scotland to take from the tournament, including valuable international experience, strong performances throughout and the memorable penalty shootout victory over Ireland that secured their place in the 5th/6th place play-off.
