Scotland Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup preparations continued with a hard-fought contest against England.

With just over three weeks to go until Scotland’s opening FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup fixture against Germany on 15th August, preparations are well underway as the countdown to the tournament continues.

This week’s three-match series against England provides a valuable opportunity for Scotland to fine-tune their preparations against top-quality opposition before travelling to Belgium for a further two warm-up fixtures against the host nation. The squad will then return to Scotland for home fixtures against South Africa, ahead of departing for the World Cup.

The opening quarter was closely contested, with both sides matching each other in intensity and creating early attacking opportunities. Scotland looked threatening through Sarah Robertson, who drove down the left side to test the England defence, while both teams earned entries into the circle, they were denied any opportunities.

England began to apply more pressure as the quarter progressed, forcing two penalty corners. Scotland’s defence stood firm to deny the first opportunity before the second came close to breaking the deadlock, with England’s drag flick deflecting off the post. Scotland Goalkeeper Jess Buchanan produced a series of crucial saves to keep the scores level, ensuring the opening 15 minutes ended with a clean sheet.

The second quarter continued in much the same fashion, with both teams maintaining a high tempo and creating chances through quick counter-attacks. Scotland earned their first penalty corner of the match after a strong baseline run from Ellie Mackenzie, but England’s defence kept the score level.

England responded with two penalty corners of their own, but Buchanan once again produced two excellent saves to frustrate the hosts. Scotland had one final chance to break the deadlock in the closing 30 seconds of the half when they won another penalty corner, but England stood firm before the halftime whistle sounded with the match still goalless.

Scotland made an energetic start to the second half, moving the ball quickly and looking to take the game to England. However, a handful of mistimed traps prevented the visitors from some promising circle entries. Despite this, Scotland continued to defend strong, with Emily Overend taking over in goal.

After withstanding sustained pressure for much of the quarter, Scotland’s resistance was finally broken with just two minutes remaining. England found the breakthrough with a deflected finish to the left post to edge 1–0 ahead. The hosts pushed for a second before the end of the quarter, but another opportunity at the back post went wide, leaving Scotland trailing by a single goal heading into the final 15 minutes.

A driving run through the middle from Bronwyn Shields led to Ellie Mackenzie winning a penalty corner at the start of the final quarter. Jen Eadie’s powerful straight strike found the back of the net. However, the effort was ruled out for dangerous play, England maintained their 1–0 advantage.

The match remained finely balanced as both teams continued to apply pressure, with Scotland defending strong to limit England’s opportunities. Scotland carved out an excellent chance as Ava Findlay combined well with Bronwyn Shields, whose inviting ball into the circle narrowly evaded a finishing touch and drifted wide.

Both teams continued to press until the final whistle but were repeatedly denied, leaving the score unchanged as the hosts secured a narrow 1–0 victory.
