Scotland Women Face England in Penultimate World Cup Warm-Up Clash

With the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup fast approaching, Scotland took to the pitch under the midday sun for the second of three warm-up matches against England. The penultimate fixture offered another important test as preparations continued ahead of the tournament.

England got the match underway with the pass-back and both sides settles quickly into the game an evenly contested opening period, trading possession and applying pressure in equal measure.

The deadlock was broken in the seventh minute when England capitalised on a gap in the Scotland defence to open the scoring. Scotland responded well, immediately threatening at the other end as a swift counter-attack saw Ava Findlay drive into the circle, forcing England onto the back foot.

England continued to press the Scotland defence and earned a penalty corner midway through the quarter. Charlotte Watson produced an excellent performance to deny Darcy Bourne’s drag flick, but England retained the pressure with another penalty corner moments later. Jess Buchanan produced back-to-back saves to deny England and ensure Scotland remained just a goal behind heading into the second quarter.

England restarted the second quarter with an aerial ball from Darcey Bourne as both sides looked to gain control of the contest. Scotland earned the first penalty corner of the period, but England defended well to deny the opportunity.

As the quarter progressed, England began to build sustained pressure, but Scotland’s defence stood firm. Jen Eadie made a crucial effort inside the defensive circle before Buchanan produced an excellent double save to deny the hosts.

Another spell of England pressure resulted in a penalty corner. Bourne’s drag flick struck the post, but the rebound fell kindly for the England forward, who made no mistake with a reverse-stick finish. England earned another penalty corner in the closing two minutes of the half, but the effort drifted wide of the left post, leaving Scotland trailing by two goals at the break.

Scotland got the second half underway and made a positive start, but it was England who created the first chance of the quarter, winning a penalty corner that the Scotland defence dealt with comfortably.

Scotland enjoyed a spell of possession and earned a penalty corner of their own, with Amy Costello’s powerful drag flick tested the England defence. Moments later, Scotland were reduced to ten players after the Scots were shown a green card.

Despite the temporary setback, Scotland continued to compete well, but England extended their lead with a third goal of the afternoon. The hosts threatened again in the closing stages of the quarter, driving into the circle, but the attack drifted wide to leave the score at 3-0 heading into the final period.

Scotland finished the match with intent, creating attacking opportunities while continuing to defend strong against an England side looking to add to their advantage. Although the hosts controlled large spells of possession, the Scotland defence remained disciplined, with Buchanan commanding her circle from the back.

Buchanan continued to produce another outstanding double save to deny England, while Jen Eadie repeatedly broke up dangerous attacks with a series of crucial clearances. Scotland also looked to play through England’s press, with Amy Costello’s aerial distribution creating space and forcing errors in the hosts’ defensive line.

Eadie was called into action once again to deny another England opportunity before the hosts’ final attack of the afternoon flashed across the face of goal and ran through the circle untouched. Scotland’s determined defensive display ensured there were no further additions to the scoreline, with the final whistle confirming a 3-0 victory for England.

All eyes now turn to tomorrow’s final fixture against England, as Scotland look to finish their warm-up series strongly before the squad departs for Belgium and the next stage of their World Cup preparations
