Scotland Women Defeat World No. 3 Belgium 2-1 as Watson and Ross Martin Deliver

What a performance from Scotland Women. On another hot day in Belgium, they claimed a memorable 2-1 victory over world No. 3 Belgium at the Belfius Arena, sending a clear message ahead of the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup.                                                                                                                                                                 

The victory came in the second match of a two-game warm-up series and provided the perfect conclusion to Scotland’s preparations, with an impressive result against one of the tournament favourites on their home turf.

Scotland settled into the contest confidently, enjoying plenty of possession and controlling play across the back as they looked to build.

Their positive start was rewarded five minutes into the opening quarter when Zara Kennedy’s attacking play helped Scotland win the first penalty corner of the match. Moments later, the pressure continued as Scotland earned a second penalty corner, and this time they made it count. Charlotte Watson fired Scotland into the lead, with the goal created through an help from Heather McEwan.

Scotland continued to threaten, with Ellie Mackenzie producing an impressive run down the right wing before driving the ball towards the penalty spot, only for the Belgian defence to react well and clear the danger. Belgium enjoyed their best spell of the quarter in the closing minute, pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but Scotland’s defence stood firm to preserve their 1-0 advantage at the first break.

Scotland carried their momentum into the second quarter, once again enjoying spells of possession and controlling the tempo in the early stages.

Belgium began to build momentum as the quarter progressed, increasing the pressure on the Scottish defence. Jess Buchanan was equal to the challenge, producing an excellent save before making two more crucial stops in quick succession to preserve Scotland’s lead as the hosts searched for an equaliser.

Scotland’s defence stayed well organised throughout the sustained period of pressure, with Buchanan’s composure between the posts proving vital. The Scottish back line frustrated Belgium’s attacking play, disrupting their rhythm and ensuring the visitors took their advantage into the half-time break.

The third quarter was an end-to-end affair, with both sides creating opportunities in a fast-paced and fiercely contested spell.

Belgium won two early penalty corners, but Scotland’s defensive unit stood firm to keep the hosts at bay. Sarah Jamieson then led a positive attack for Scotland, while the visitors continued to move the ball confidently out from the back. Strong connections between the defence and midfield allowed Scotland to play through Belgium’s high press and maintain periods of controlled possession.

Belgium responded with another attacking spell, but goalkeeper Emily Overend produced an important save to preserve Scotland’s lead. At the other end, Ellie Mackenzie made another driving run into the Belgian circle before being brought down by the home defence.

The hosts continued to press, although a mistimed strike allowed Scotland to regain possession and launch another attack. Belgium then earned another penalty corner, but Overend was again equal to the effort with another excellent save.

Belgium’s persistence was eventually rewarded late in the quarter. Winning the ball from Scotland’s press, the hosts found the top right corner with a superb finish that left Overend with little chance, levelling the scores at 1-1 heading into the final quarter.

Scotland showed composure and determination to regain control of the contest. Amy Costello was influential throughout, helping Scotland maintain possession and relieve pressure with her experience and distribution.

Just five minutes into the final quarter, Scotland restored their lead through Jess Ross Martin. Confidently putting the visitors back in front, capping off an excellent attacking move and giving Scotland a crucial 2-1 advantage against the world’s third-ranked side.Belgium responded by throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Scotland’s defence stood firm under sustained pressure. Rebecca Birch produced one of the moments of the match with a superb tackle in one-on-one to deny a dangerous Belgian attack, while Scotland’s defensive press continued to frustrate the hosts and force errors.

With four minutes remaining, Belgium withdrew their goalkeeper in favour of an extra outfield player, increasing the pressure on the Scottish defence. Costello’s aerial passes provided a valuable outlet, helping Scotland gain territory and relieve the relentless Belgian attacks.

Belgium launched another attack with two minutes remaining, but Scotland regained possession as the clock ticked down. The hosts had one final opportunity in the closing seconds, earning a penalty corner after a last attack. However, Scotland defended strongly until the final whistle, sparked scenes of celebrations as the squad came together to celebrate a memorable 2-1 victory over the World Cup hosts.

What a way to finish the warm-up campaign. Scotland produced a superb all-round performance, combining resilience, discipline and attacking quality to claim a memorable 2-1 victory over one of the world’s best teams.

Attention now turns to home soil, where Scotland will host South Africa in a two-match series at Peffermill Playing Fields in Edinburgh this weekend, before returning to Belgium to begin their FIH Hockey World Cup campaign and take on the world best.
