First ever Scottish Hockey National Junior Aspire Tournament coming to Countesswells Sports Field
Scottish Hockey’s first ever National Junior Aspire Tournament will be played at Robert Gordon’s College Countesswells Sports Field on 12 May 2023.
The tournament, backed by EuroHockey Solidarity Funding, targets increased participation from state schools with a focus on the 12-14 age range. This is a great opportunity to reach new players and enable schools to have teams play hockey in a fun and friendly setting.
This event follows a series of regional Junior Aspire Tournaments around the country for S1 and S2 pupils predominantly from state schools. All schools who participated in these events were invited to the national tournament.
Craig Harper, Head of Sport at Robert Gordon’s College, said, “It’s brilliant for Robert Gordon’s College to be working with Scottish Hockey. As a school we’re always looking for a chance to work with governing bodies who share our desire to increase participation in sport, and this tournament is an example of that. We’re really pleased to be part of this opportunity for more hockey to be played in the North of Scotland and to help grow the game for children.”
George Thornton, Scottish Hockey’s Junior Competitions and Events Manager, said, “We’re delighted that so many schools have signed up for our inaugural National Junior Aspire Tournament – it promises to be a fun day. Hundreds of young hockey players from around the country enjoyed our regional events, which were a huge success. The Solidarity grant from the European Hockey Federation has allowed us to waive all entry fees and subsidise travel to the regional events.
“Our aspiration is to see more state schools playing in our hockey competitions in future seasons, and we hope that this event inspires them to do so. We’re keen to make this a regular event for this age group.”
