Semi-final places confirmed for U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow
Scotland 4-1 Switzerland
Scotland confirmed its place in the semi-final against Austria with a 4-1 victory over Switzerland at U18 EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.
Scotland took control of the game from the outset but found the Swiss defence tough to break down. Amy Edgar produced two good runs down the right, and Ava Graham was also causing problems, but the Scots were unable to create a clean opening.
Despite Scotland’s pressure it was Switzerland who took the lead in the second quarter. Eleonore Griessen provided the strike to put Switzerland 1-0 ahead.
The Scots quickly bit back and it was Anika Miedema who smashed home into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
Scotland continued to press for goals and a second strike arrived before the half time break. Excellent build-up play by Marianna MacLean saw her slip a lovely pass into the circle for Autumn Hunter to deflect into the net for 2-1
Two quick fire goals in the third quarter saw Scotland race into a comfortable lead. First MacLean started and finished a lovely move that began with her winning the ball on the left and then she popped up at the left post to score.
Then a delightful three pass penalty corner routine was converted by Jess Garden to make 4-1.
A comfortable final quarter brought no further goals and Scotland booked their place in the semis on Friday.
Ireland 6-2 Turkey
A game of eight goals saw Ireland win three out of three pool matches at U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow with a 6-2 win over Turkey.
It took Ireland the best part of the opening quarter to get going but when they did the goals came fast. A penalty corner strike by Evie Girvan opening the scoring with a lovely finish.
A second goal wasn’t far away and it was Darcy Shields who fizzed the ball into the top left corner to make it 2-0.
In the second quarter Ireland continued to dominate and soon grabbed a third goal when Erin Pim turned and smashed a low shot into the right corner for 3-0.
A penalty corner finish from Scarlett Taylor made it 4-0 when she found the bottom left corner.
Ireland continued to attack in the third quarter and despite a succession of penalty corners they couldn’t find the net.
Girvan scored her second and Ireland’s fifth in the final quarter and then Turkey bagged a goal of their own. Aleyna Satilmis sunk a penalty corner low against the back board to pull it back to 5-1.
Then came to sublime goals. The first was to Ireland and a delightful near post deflection into the roof of the net by Isobel Field. Moments later and an equally glorious near post deflection by Esila Isyar for Turkey made it 6-2.
Lithuania 0-4 Austria
A solid 4-0 win over Lithuania put Austria into the semi-finals of U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.
The contest began with a goal, and it was a goal of great quality. Malwina Pysznik was sent running into the circle and fizzed the ball into the roof of the net for 1-0 to Austria.
Chances were few and far between until the last minute of the first half when Lithuania came close; first through a penalty corner that zipped just wide of the left post, and then through open play, but they couldn’t find an equaliser.
Austria put some daylight between the teams in the third quarter with two goals. Pia Reisegger deflected the ball into the net from a well-executed penalty corner routine.
Then Reisegger struck again with a strike through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 3-0.
At the end of the contest the scoring was completed by a Helena Polak drag flick into the bottom left corner to give Austria a 4-0 win.
Czechia 2-1 Wales
In a tournament of late winners Czechia produced the goods with a last minute penalty corner to beat Wales 2-1 and qualify for the semi-finals.
Wales got off to a great start when they struck the opening goal of the game. A penalty corner found the top right corner via a drag flick by Grace Spender to make it 1-0.
The second quarter continued to be tight. Czechia racked up a number of penalty corner opportunities but were unable to make any of them count, and the Welsh reached half time in charge.
The Czech pressure in the second half began to count and they managed to forge an equaliser. Anna Fuxova sailed a drag flick into the top left corner to make it 1-1.
The final quarter was full of drama and it was Czechia who came out on top. A late looping penalty corner from Karolina Lojanova saw her effort land in the net to make it 2-1 to Czechia.
