Scotland and Czechia win on day 3 of U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II

Wales 2-6 Scotland

Scotland made it two wins from two, and semi-final qualification, with a 6-2 victory over Wales in U18 EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.

Wales started the match strong and put pressure on Scotland’s out ball. It was from a pressure situation like this that they scored the opening goal. Nancy Whittlestone crashed the ball into the top left corner to make it 1-0.

Scotland eased back into the game and as the quarter came to an end, they bagged an equaliser. A penalty corner routine saw Jess Garden pick out Jennifer Cain for a far post tap in. 1-1.

In the second quarter Scotland was dominant and crashed home the goals. Ava Graham smashed the ball into the bottom left corner from the top of the circle at a penalty corner.

Minutes later, in a carbon copy of Graham’s first, she scored again to make it 3-1 to Scotland.

Then Amy Edgar made it 4-1 when she deflected the inside the right post after Anika Miedema won the ball and slipped a lovely pass into the circle.

Wales played their way into the contest in the third quarter and their work rate was rewarded with a goal; Amber Millard-Smith rifled a penalty corner rebound home to make it 4-2.

Any thoughts of a Welsh comeback were put to bed in the final quarter. A swift counter attack led by Marianna MacLean was finished off by Autumn Hunter, sliding in to tap into an open goal, to make it 5-2.

Then Tabitha Peck smashed the back board with a powerful low drive to make it 6-2, and complete the scoring.

Czechia 2-1 Switzerland

Czechia scored a late winner to defeat Switzerland 2-1 at U18 EuroHockey Championship II.

It was a very even start to the contest at a wet Glasgow National Hockey Centre with Czechia edging the early play.

The Czech quality was visible when they scored the opening goal; Nikola Sedlakova was brave to force the ball over the line while under serious pressure to make it 1-0 to Czechia.

Czechia continued to pressure in the second quarter with some searching passes into the Swiss circle but couldn’t fashion any further chances.

The third quarter began with a succession of penalty corners going to Czechia but they were unable to find a finish.

Then Switzerland took control of the match, pegging Czechia back, but they couldn’t create a clean opening for a strike at goal.

It was a final quarter of drama that ended in victory for Czechia. Switzerland continued to peg the Czechs back and scored a well-deserved equaliser when Maya Flury swept home for 1-1.

Switzerland went hunting for a winner but a sucker punch counter attack with a minute left to play saw Czechia bag a late winner through Adela Uhrova for 2-1.
