Action-packed day 1 at U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow

Scotland 5-0 Czechia

A sensational 5-0 win for Scotland over Czechia saw the host nation get off to a winning start to U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.

Scotland came out flying and caused havoc down the right side. Some excellent skill by Jennifer Cain created the first opening but Czechia survived.

It wouldn’t take Scotland long to score. Another swift raid down the right saw the ball zipped into Autumn Hunter who deflected home to make it 1-0.

The second quarter saw the Scots match their tempo of the first quarter and it led to them bagging two more goals.

Scotland tore through the Czechia defence at pace and Ava Graham was on hand to slip the ball into the net for 2-0.

Graham struck again as half time approached when she was well placed to knock a penalty corner rebound over the line for 3-0.

Czechia upped their game in the second half and a counter attack was denied a goal by an excellent save by Maddie Shepherd in goal for Scotland.

Scotland’s fourth would soon follow and it was Graham who blasted a penalty corner against the back board to complete her hat-trick. 4-0.

In the final quarter Czechia had the chance to pull one back from a penalty stroke but Verity Shields saved to keep the clean sheet intact.

The goal scoring was eventually completed when Amy Edgar popped up with a far post finish after some slick build up down the left for 5-0.

 

Ireland 9-0 Lithuania

A superb 9-0 victory saw Ireland get their U18 Girls EuroHockey Championship II campaign off to a goal-laden start.

Ireland got off to a good start by bagging an early goal. An attack down the right saw the ball find its way to the far post for Evie Girvan to tap home from close range to make it 1-0.

The Irish piled on the pressure but found the Lithuanian defence steady and resolute. A tremendous diving save low to the right corner by Agne Petraityte denied Ireland a second goal at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter Ireland bagged their second in an almost carbon copy of the first. An attack down the right saw the ball fall kindly for Girvan to prod home her, and Ireland’s, second of the match as half time approached.

It began raining goals in the second half as Ireland struck five times. Isla Allen was fist to force home a penalty corner rebound before Scarlett Taylor blasted a penalty corner into the bottom left corner. Isobel Field fired home for 5-0 before quick fire penalty corner goals into the bottom left corner by Field and Darcy Shields made it 7-0 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter a counter attack was finished off from a tight angle by Girvan for her hat-trick before Eva Doyle completed the scoring at 9-0.

Austria 2-0 Turkey

Austria earned a 2-0 win on day one of U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow against Turkey.

It was a very close and competitive opening half. Austria edged the play in an end-to-end contest but it was a half that created no chances of note.

The second half brought goal scoring opportunities and in the third quarter Austria struck twice. First, Philippa Proksch struck home a low penalty corner effort to make it 1-0.

As the quarter reached a conclusion Celina Kolbl doubled Austria’s advantage from a penalty corner. The first effort was blocked but it fell for Kolbl, the injector, who fired home for 2-0.

Turkey put in a fight back in the final quarter and came close to finding the net only to be denied by a sensational double save by Elena Lendl in goal for Austria.

There would be no further goals and Austria took the win.

 

Wales 1-1 Switzerland

A late equaliser from Wales made for a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow.

The first quarter was very tight and a solid midfield battle. The only chance of the quarter fell for Wales when a penalty corner effort zipped wide of the left post.

Wales continued to edge the play in the second quarter, and fashioned a couple of penalty corner opportunities, but still there were no clean strikes at goal.

In the third quarter Switzerland sprung into life and pressed Wales high up the pitch. The press resulted in the opening goal when Lia Gasser slammed a low shot home after some nice pressing, and build up, down the right.

It very nearly went to 2-0 when Mia Schonauer slipped a low shot past the goalkeeper, but a spectacular goal line clearance denied the strike.
