Ireland win U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow, Scotland take silver

Ireland won U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow with a 3-1 victory over Scotland.

Ireland made a fast start to the final and was rewarded with an early goal. A penalty stroke was awarded and Rebekah Lennon found the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.

It was almost 2-0 by the end of the quarter when Kate Herron raced through on goal after an aerial ball sent her through but Maddie Shepherd made a sensational save to deny a goal.

Scotland came out sharp in the second quarter and quickly found an equaliser. A lovely through pass sent Marianna MacLean one-on-one with the goalkeeper and she coolly slipped the ball low against the backboard for 1-1.

The longer the quarter went on the more competitive it became with the contest becoming a battle for possession.

After half time the match continued to be fierce. Ireland cut Scotland open but Hollai Quinn was denied by a close range save.

Then the second goal came for Ireland and it was Quinn who found the net via a scoop from a tight ant for 2-1.

At the end of the quarter it went to 3-1 with Quinn at the double from a penalty corner for 3-1.

Scotland threw everything at Ireland in the final quarter. Ava Graham had a succession of penalty corners charged down, and one that fizzed agonisingly past the left post.

Despite the late push, Ireland held strong and claimed victory in Glasgow.

 

Austria 1-2 Czechia

Czechia won the bronze medal at U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II in Glasgow with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Austria.

The first chance of the match went to Austria and it was the left post that denied them the lead.

Up the other end of the pitch and Czechia came close to scoring but Anna Fuxova was denied but an excellent diving save at the left post by Elena Lendl denied the goal.

The third quarter was very tight with few chances of note. Czechia was denied by a low save at the right post.

Just when it looked like the match would go to a shootout, it began to rain goals. Eliska Jindrakova opened the scoring for Czechia with a low strike from a tight angle to make it 1-0.

Austria came back swinging and Celina Kolbl swept a penalty corner routine into the roof of the net for 1-1.

Then, with a minute remaining, Pavla Hola forced the ball home from a penalty corner for a 2-1 victory for Czechia, and the bronze medal.

 

Turkey 0-4 Wales

Wales ended U18 Girls EuroHockey Championship II with a 4-0 win over Turkey in Glasgow.

The game was end-to-end from the outset but both defences did well to restrict opportunities for goals. Turkey came close with an audacious lob and Wales had two penalty corner opportunities in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter Wales nearly took the lead through some lovely skill and shooting from Poppy Done, but were denied by a superb diving save at the bottom left corner by Evin Yagsi.

The opener eventually arrived for Wales and it was a penalty corner into the bottom right corner by Grace Spender that made it 1-0.

Wales continued to assert control at the start of the second half but as the third quarter continued, Turkey forced their way back into the contest.

The second goal for Wales would arrive soon enough and it was Done who fired home from a penalty corner into the bottom left corner for 2-0.

Soffia Easterby then made the game safe when who scored a tap in to make it 3-0 for Wales.

There was still time for one more goal for Wales and Done struck again with another penalty corner into the roof of the net to make it 4-0.

 

Switzerland 3-1 Lithuania

A 3-1 victory for Switzerland over Lithuania relegated the Lithuanians from U18 Girls’ EuroHockey Championship II.

With so much at stake this match was always going to be a nervy affair. A very tentative opening quarter saw both sides take a tactical approach but unable to create any real chances.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern to the first but Lithuania fashioned a penalty corner opportunity that was well charged down.

Lithuania began to exert themselves on the contest and Diamante Kundrotaite almost found the net with a fierce near post effort, but it was well saved.

In the third quarter a superb weaving run by Diamante Vietrinaite almost resulted in a goal for Lithuania but her final effort slipped wide of the left post.

Then, against the run of play, Switzerland scored. A lovely turn and shot on the counter attack by Neila Blum saw the ball fizz into the bottom right corner for 1-0.

In the final quarter Switzerland sealed the win when Lia Gasser swept home from close range to make it 2-0.

Austeja Dimskyte fired home a late penalty corner strike for Lithuania but a late finish into the top right corner by Maya Flury made it 3-1 for Switzerland at the hooter.
