Spanish test for junior Scots in Madrid
Scotland U21 Men have been presented with an early opportunity to gauge the level of their European ambitions ahead of the EuroHockey Junior Nations Championships next summer with two junior international matches against Spain in Madrid on 26 & 27 November.
Head Coach Graham Moodie has named seventeen players for the encounters with their Spanish counterparts, who are in preparation for the FIH Junior World Cup in India next month.
The ex-Great Britain international has also included seven individuals from the Scotland U18 squad that retained its place in the EuroHockey U18 Championship last summer.
“The matches against Spain offer us a great early season opportunity to see the players in action against quality opposition ahead of the Europeans next summer”, said Moodie.
“Spain are in preparation for the Junior World Cup next month so I expect the matches to be high in intensity and it presents the players stepping up from the U18 squad with the chance to experience the level of hockey we are likely to encounter next summer.”
Glynhill Kelburne trio Ed Greaves, Jack McKenzie and Lee Morton have already experienced continental competition this season having competed in the EHL Round 1.1 in October, although club team-mate Ross McIntyre misses out after incurring an ankle injury against Western Wildcats last weekend.
PSL Team Sport Clydesdale are also well represented with five players, including Grant Scott, Michael McKenzie, Gregor Hirst, Murray Collins and Peter Baldwin.
“It’s great to get these matches so early in the season”, continued Moodie. “Everyone will get a chance to impress against Spain and we’re looking forward to the trip.”
