Scots go down to Belgium in Paris
Despite an encouraging performance, Scotland Men lost 7-1 to tournament favourites Belgium in the second match of the FIH World League Round 2 competition earlier today.
Two goals each for Sebastien Dockier and Tom Boon, added to strikes from Florent van Aubel, Loick Luypaert and Tanguy Cosyns leaves the Scots searching for their first points of the competition. Edinburgh University’s Callum Duke got the national side’s consolation goal.

Scotland Team Manager Eugene Connolly said, “We played very well for sixty-five minutes of the game and it was two lapses of concentration either side of half time and right at the death that produced a scoreline that wasn’t really reflective of the play.
“Callum Duke scored an excellent goal after two one-two’s with Ian Moodie so there were pleasing aspects from today’s game. That said, we’re obviously disappointed but Belgium are a very good side.
“We face Poland now on Thursday and we’re optimistic of getting points on the board having beaten them recently.”
Scotland found themselves two goals down early on in the match as Sebastien Dockier’s quick-fire double (10’, 11’) gave the Belgians a 2-0 lead.
Belgium extended their advantage in the 20th minute when Florent van Aubel scored from open play to make it 3-0.
The Scots pulled one back shortly before half-time when Edinburgh University’s Callum Duke pounced at the end of a Scottish move into the right of the circle to finish past Jeremy Gucassoff and make it 3-1 in the 33rd minute. The joy was short-lived however, as Tim Boon finished off a penalty corner set-play to make it 4-1 right on half-time.
Shortly after the re-start, Belgium made it 5-1 when Loick Luypaert fired the ball into the roof of the net from a penalty corner in the 38th minute, before Boon claimed his second goal of the game in the 43rd minute when his penalty corner strike flew into the top corner of Allan Dick’s goal.
Scotland came close to grabbing a second goal in the latter stages of the match but Belgium had the last say when Tanguy Cosyns struck right on the full-time hooter to round off the scoring at 7-1 in the 70th minute.
