Scotland suffer Ireland defeat
Ireland (Speers 4’, 25, Watkins 49’ Duke 60’) 4-1 Scotland (O.G, 27’)
Scotland Women suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Ireland this evening, going 1-0 down in the three match series being played at Newtownabbey this week.
An Irish own goal, caused by a deflection on a Holly Cram strike inside the circle, was the only consolation for the Scots.
Scotland Head Coach Gordon Shepherd said, “Today Ireland took their chances but the shoreline flatters them slightly. I’m happy with the effort put in by the players but there are areas we will look to work towards improving for Thursday’s game.”
Ireland opening the scoring as early as the fourth minute when Alex Speers finished off Nicci Daly’s cutback from the goal-line, putting the visitors on the back foot at 1-0.
Ireland almost extended their lead midway through the first half when Dierdre Duke’s shot narrowly missed the target.
The first Scottish attack on goal was registered in the 19th minute but the penalty corner set-play was defended well by the home side.
Ireland then won a penalty corner in the 23rd minute, from which Audrey O’Flynn’s shot was defended, but the Irish were awarded a second penalty corner from which they doubled their lead to 2-0 when Speers finished from close range in the 25th minute.
Nevertheless, Gordon Shepherd’s side pulled a goal back at 2-1 eight minutes from half-time when Holly Cram’s shot took a deflection off an Irish stick to land in the back of the net.
With conditions proving tricky in the second half due to the rain, both sides struggled with the ball.
However, Ireland reclaimed their two goal advantage in the 49th minute when Nikki Evans’ effort on target was blocked by Amy Gibson only for Chloe Watkins to finish off high into the net for a 3-1 lead.
With Ireland reduced to nine players as a consequence of two yellow cards, Scotland piled on pressure but were unable to make the numerical advantage count.
They were left to rue the missed opportunity to get back into the game when the fourth goal was scored in the 60th minute. Megan Frazer blasted an effort from the top of the circle, which was deflected into the net by Duke to round off the scoring at 4-1 to Ireland.
