Sarah Wilson and Martin Madden appointed to third Olympics

Scottish umpires Sarah Wilson and Martin Madden have both been selected for the upcoming Olympic Games, in Paris. It will be a third Olympics appearance for both, and further cements Scotland’s status as producing some of the best officials in world hockey.

Their selection comes on the back of years of hard work and commitment to achieve their ambitions.

In 2016 in Rio both umpired a number of critical matches, including the Bronze Medal Matches.

Following Rio, Wilson was awarded the FIH Umpire of the Year award and Madden became the 39th man to receive the FIH Golden Whistle.

At the Tokyo Olympics Sarah umpired the Women’s Gold medal final between The Netherlands and Argentina. Martin, meanwhile, umpired matches between New Zealand and India, Argentina and Spain, Argentina and New Zealand, Russia and Germany, Japan and Spain, and Spain and New Zealand.

At the recent EuroHockey Championships Sarah Wilson umpired the men’s final on and Martin Madden umpired the women’s final, and was the reserve for the men’s final – remarkable achievements.

In addition our technical officials Martin Monaghan and Lorna Eadie officiated on the women’s final and Lorna officiated on the men’s bronze medal match. These appointments reflect their abilities and the high regard in which our Scottish officials are held.

Scotland’s International Appointments Committee Representative, Anne Wotherspoon, said, “This is another great achievement for both Sarah and Martin to be appointed to a third Olympic Games; and to have two umpires appointed, once again, is terrific news for Scotland.  Having represented Scotland in Tokyo and Rio, both have continued to go from strength-to-strength in their umpiring careers. I am very proud that all their hard work and perseverance has paid off in being appointed to the Olympics in Paris.
