Round Up of Saturday’s Action in the Men’s & Women’s Premiership
Western Wildcats remain in pole position in the men`s Premiership with a comfortable 4-0 win at bottom side Dunfermline Carnegie. The game was effectively over by the interval, Jamie Golden started the scoring from the spot, Rob Harwood doubled the tally when he turned on a sixpence and fired the ball home, and finally Tommy Austin, fresh from Great Britain under-21 duties in Malaysia, finished off a well-worked team move. Early in the second half Hamish Galt sunk a penalty corner, thereafter there were a lot of chances coming the Wildcats way but no further additions to the score.
Watsonians are in second spot despite a 2-2 draw against Edinburgh University who are still fourth. After a run of seven wins this was Watsonians first dropped points but they are only a couple of points adrift of Western. After a goalless first half, Jonny Bradley put the students ahead until Dan Coultas converted from the spot to level at 1-1. The students looked to be heading for the three points when Bradley again scored but back came Watsonians to secure a share of the points through Tommy Orr in the closing minutes.
Third placed Grange made heavy weather of a 4-3 win over a plucky Uddingston side that simply didn`t know when they were beaten. In fact it was the Lanarkshire side that took the lead in the first quarter with a fierce finish from Finn Halliday – although somewhat against the run of play. But David Nairn levelled with a close in shot for 1-1 at the interval.
Grange seemed to have the match under control when Dylan Bean put them 2-1 up with a firm strike. Grange appeared under even more control when fellow Aussie Ola Marshall took the ball round both defender and keeper to make it 3-1. But Uddy refused to lie down and Ben Young from open play brought the score back to 3-2. Again Grange seemed to have the match wrapped up with a Dylan Bean deflection for 4-2. Uddy came back again, this time Robbie Forrest finished off a clever penalty corner routine and Grange were again reduced to a slender lead. However, now time had run out and Grange looked a little relieved to hear the final whistle.
Grove Menzieshill`s recent run of good form continued at Titwood with a 4-3 win over Clydesdale to move into the top six for the first time. The Tayside scorers were John Donald at a penalty corner, carbon copy strikes from Jamie Spratt and another set piece conversion by Albert Rowling.
ESM`s recent impressive run came to an end courtesy of a 4-2 victory for Hillhead. But the Edinburgh side are still in fifth place. An early double from Matt Carder, the first from a counter-attack and the other saw him run the length of the pitch and fire the ball under the keeper, put Hillhead two up. Before the interval Paddy Crookshanks had reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Goals were exchanged in the second half, Fraser Ward made it 3-1 for the Glasgow side but that was pulled back to 3-2 from the spot by Jack Collister after Crookshanks had won the penalty. Fears of another surrendered victory haunted Hillhead but a close range finish by Ward stifled that concern and the three points this time went to Yan Adams` charges.
Finally, Inverleith and Dundee Wanderers finished 2-2 – both got a point but are still in the bottom part of the table. Charlie Jack and Hamish Norval scored for the Edinburgh side while Callum Ross and Kennedy Gibb replied for the Taysiders.
Watsonians took full advantage of the postponement of Clydesdale Western`s game against Fjordhus Reivers to slip back to pole position in the women`s Premiership with a convincing 7-0 win over neighbours Grange. The champions are now a point ahead of Clydesdale, but they have that crucial game in hand.
The champions were six up at the interval – the goals flowed from Jess Garden, Ellie Wilson, Ruth McKenzie, Sarah Jamieson, Molly Murphy and Milly Berndes-Cade. Jenna Park scored the only goal of the second half.
GHK moved back up to third in the table after a crushing seven goal win over neighbours Hillhead. Here there were two goals each for Lucy Williamson and Kayleigh Justice, the others came from Joanne Boyle along with Emma Tennant and Ellie Hutcheson.
GHK in fact took advantage of a 1-1 draw between Edinburgh University and Wildcats at Peffermill. After a first quarter dominated by the students, it was the Cats who took the lead through Frances Lonergan, she created space for herself in the circle and slotted the ball past the keeper. Zara Kennedy quickly levelled the score for the Edinburgh students when she pounced on a rebound at a penalty corner…and that was the half-time score. The second half was end to end but neither side could find the winner.
St Andrews University recorded their second victory of the season in some style with a 5-1 over the students from Glasgow, and they are now moving up towards the top six. There were two goals each for Liz Agatucci and Hannah Coull while Sabine Hommes got the other.
Uddingston and Inverleith fought out an intense end-to-end 1-1 draw although the result helped neither side emerge from the danger area. The Lanarkshire outfit opened the scoring in the third quarter but Rachael Campbell levelled with an intelligent lob over the keeper after a through ball from Kirsty Cannon. Both keepers had some good saves to keep the score down but Inverleith had chances near the end to claim all the points, however no takers.
