Nine hockey players selected for Winning Students 100 support

Nine hockey players are set to benefit from Scotland’s national sport scholarship programme, Winning Students 100, as it announces a record 110 student-athletes to receive support for the 2026–27 academic year.

The selected hockey players represent universities from across Scotland, reflecting the strength of the sport’s student-athlete pathway and the ambition of those balancing the demands of high-performance hockey with further and higher education.

The nine hockey players selected are:

  • Alastair Douglas – Robert Gordon University
  • Andrew McAllister – University of Strathclyde
  • Bronwyn Shields – University of Stirling
  • Calum Douglas – The Open University in Scotland
  • Caterina Nelli – University of Edinburgh
  • Connie Roxburgh – University of Edinburgh
  • Jamie Green – Heriot-Watt University
  • Tommy Austin – The Open University in Scotland
  • Zara Kennedy – University of Edinburgh

Winning Students 100 is a world-leading dual-career programme designed to help talented athletes achieve their potential in both sport and education. Backed by sportscotland and the Scottish Funding Council, the programme provides tailored support, academic flexibility and financial grants of up to £3,000.

For student hockey players, this support can make a real difference, helping them manage the competing demands of training, competition, travel and study while continuing to develop as athletes and individuals.

The 2026–27 cohort spans 32 sports and 17 colleges and universities, with athletes based across Scotland. The programme has also recorded a 10% increase in applications over the past two years, with growing interest from students competing in sports including hockey.

Since its launch in 2008, Winning Students 100 has supported more than 1,800 student-athletes, helping them navigate the challenges of combining academic achievement with sporting excellence.

Further strengthening hockey’s position within the programme, the sport has been awarded Priority Sport status for the 2026–2028 cycle.

This recognises hockey’s contribution to Scotland’s high-performance sport system and Scottish Hockey’s commitment to supporting talented players as they progress through their sporting and academic journeys.

As a Priority Sport, hockey is eligible to receive up to 20 Winning Students 100 scholarship awards annually. Awards are not guaranteed, with each application subject to the programme’s annual nomination and selection process and its sporting and academic criteria.

The recognition provides an important opportunity to continue supporting hockey players with the potential to excel, helping them build the skills, resilience and experience needed to succeed both on and off the pitch.

Congratulations to Alastair, Andrew, Bronwyn, Calum, Caterina, Connie, Jamie, Tommy and Zara on their selection. Scottish Hockey wishes all nine players every success as they continue their studies and pursue their hockey ambitions in the year ahead.
