Western Wildcats, Watsonians and Uddingston still hold perfect records in the Open/Men`s Premiership
Five teams started the day with perfect records in the Open/Men’s Premiership but after the action only Western Wildcats, Watsonians and Uddingston retained that status – Edinburgh University and Clydesdale foundered.
Perhaps the result of the day was at Peffermill where champions Edinburgh University were held to a 2-2 draw by Hillhead. It was a bit of a last minute affair, Hillhead were trailing 2-1 with the minutes running out, they were then awarded a penalty stroke and Euan Menzies did the business, and the points were shared.
Earlier Zac Turtle put the students ahead only for Euan Menzies to level for Hillhead from a penalty corner. Keir Robb restored Edinburgh`s lead and the points looked secured but for Hillhead`s last gasp equaliser after Dan Squires was fouled in the circle.
Edinburgh`s Martin Beckford remarked: “It was a game of few chances, there’s plenty to work on ahead of the EHL this coming week.” In contrast, Hillhead`s retort was “It was a battling defensive performance across the team that minimised the chances offered to Uni.”
Western Wildcats move to the top of the Premiership on goal difference after a 9-3 mauling of Inverleith. It was three at half time, Angus Wylie opened followed by Adam Mackenzie and then Andrew McAllister at a penalty corner. The goals continued to follow in the second half, McAllister scored another two penalty corner opportunities for his hat-trick, Fraser Moran picked up a couple and the others came from Cameron Moran and finally Rohan Marwaha. Inverleith`s replies came from Mark Harley, Will James and Robbie Law…and it`s not often that the Western keeper lets in three.
Uddingston continue their promising early run in the Premiership with a 2-0 win at Clydesdale – and again another clean sheet…three in a row. Scorers for Uddy were Euan Gilmour, continuing his good run of goals this season, and Jedd Campbell at a penalty corner.
Charlie Jack`s hat-trick, his second of the season, was the catalyst in Watsonians away 3-0 win over Grove Menzieshill – and that preserves their perfect record after three games.
ESM Lions have roared up the table with a 3-2 win over Grange, who are still paying the price of a young side and in the midst of a rebuilding process – that can be a very frustrating process. However, it was Grange who took the lead through an open play strike from Murray Banks but by the interval the Lions had levelled with a direct penalty corner goal from Thomas McInroy. Then up stepped Livio Belotti, ironically a Grange player last season, to put the Lions 3-1 up, the first came from a lift over the keeper and that was followed with a conversion from the spot. Grange`s Albert Rowling pulled one back from a penalty corner and it was game-on in the final quarter, there were chances at both ends but the scoreline failed to change.
In the battle of the newly promoted sides, it was Kelburne who emerged with the three points with a 5-3 win over Dunfermline Carnegie who are rooted to the bottom. And it was a game of four penalties – Kelburne were awarded three and scored two while Carnegie converted theirs.
Martin McIntosh scored twice from the spot for the Buddies but the main catalyst emanated from a hat-trick by Scott Peters. For Carnegie Andy Doyle scored twice and Aidan McQuade bot the other.
In the only women`s game of the day Hillhead were 3-0 winners over visitors Gordonians, the scorers were Grace Rettie, Morna Sinclair and Julia Baldwin. Hillhead`s Jenny Campbell was heard to announce “It’s a great start to get three points.”
