Golden Baptism for Edinburgh University at EHL
Edinburgh University took to the prestigious EHL like a duck to water, the Scottish champions were comfortable 4-0 winners over French champions Lille in their opening first round match in Eindhoven.
The foundation was undoubtedly laid by a hat-trick of set piece goals by Jamie Golden. However, at the other end of the pitch Edinburgh keeper Matthew Taylor and his defensive colleagues kept a clean sheet – always an achievement.
It looked more as if the Edinburgh students were veterans rather than novices at the EHL.
The result means that Edinburgh top Pool A with the five points on offer along with a healthy goal difference. Now all that is required is another win against Austrian champions SV Arminen tomorrow morning and the Scottish champions will be heading for the knock-out stages next Easter. That would be some achievement.
Edinburgh took the lead in eleven minutes when Golden converted from the spot to settle the nerves. After two penalty corners which came to nothing in the second quarter, in 20 minutes Golden hit the net at the third set piece to double the tally and that is how it stood at the interval.
If Lille had any notion of a comeback in the second half Golden stifled it with his hat-trick goal at another penalty corner.
There was no way back for the French in the final, especially when Tom Cahalin added the students’ fourth from open play. Lille’s cause was hardly helped with lengthy sin bin visits for Oscar Delacroix and Niels Dereumaux.
Now for the Austrians!
