Grove Menzieshill top Women’s National League 1 as Grange close gap in men’s table

Grove Menzieshill overtook Edinburgh University at the top of women`s National League 1 with a comfortable 5-1 win over second bottom Hillhead.

The Taysiders now lead the students by two points and still with a game in hand.

Set piece expert Louise Carroll scored twice and the other goals came from Jenny Walls, Kate Robertson and former Scotland captain Linda Clement.

A hat-trick by Vikki Bunce was the catalyst in Dundee Wanderers` 5-0 win over Erskine Stewart`s Melville, teenager Emily Dark added two more to the tally.

Grange moved to within two points of men’s National League 1 leaders Bromac Kelburne with a 4-3 win over second bottom Clydesdale at Titwood.

The first half was a very even affair in terms of possession, but Grange`s clinical finishing was the difference between the sides. Grange took the lead after 15 minutes with their first real chance of the game – a Luke Cranney pass into the circle was deflected home by Frank Ryan.

The lead was short lived; within a couple of minutes the Grange defence was found sleeping and Paddy Lonergan popped up to poke the ball home for the equaliser.

Hesitation in the Clydesdale defence gave Grange the lead for the second time, Cranney was given too much space to force the ball home.

Just on the interval the Edinburgh side went 3-1 ahead when a cross from the left was deflected into the Clydesdale net by Alan Johnston.

That is how the score remained until 20 minutes to go when Danny Cain pulled one back for Clydesdale to give the second placed side the jitters.

But good build-up play by Johnston and Joe Waterston at a counter attack set up Cranney to put Grange 4-2 ahead. Struan Walker got a third for the Glasgow side but it was Grange who took the crucial three points.Wildcats v Grange m 2016

Western Wildcats pulled themselves out of the relegation play-off spot with a 6-0 victory over bottom side Gordonians, set piece expert Adam McKenzie scored a hat-trick, Fraser Calder got two and the other came from Rob Harwood.

Uddingston held on to fourth place in the table following a 2-2 draw with Edinburgh University. Jacky Tran scored for the Lanarkshire side following a penalty corner breakdown in the first half and Alex Shaw levelled the result with ten minutes left.

Watsonians dropped down to eighth place despite beating Hillhead 3-0 at home, they have been overtaken by Wildcats also on 14 points but with a slightly better goal difference.
