Cargilfield School U11 hockey team third in the UK
Cargifield School U11 hockey team became third best in the UK last month as they took bronze in the Under 11 Boys’ Prep School Hockey Sevens tournament.
Every year over 120 schools compete in the Under 11 Boys’ Prep School Hockey Sevens. After the regional qualifiers, 20 schools attend the Finals at Wellington College, Berkshire. Cargilfield School is a Prep School situated in Barnton, Edinburgh, who has a history of performing well at this tournament. Over the past 8 years, the Under 11 Boys’ hockey team have qualified for the Finals, winning the cup in 2008 after being runners up in 2007; in 2009 they won Bronze. Making it four top 3 finishes in 8 years.
The Cargilfield VII, led by Charlie Hamilton and Brodie Nichol played a round robin of matches winning 3 and losing 1. In the four pool matches, they scored ten goals, conceding just one, thanks to their incredibly tough defensive pairing of Archie Spurway and Charlie Pattison and goalkeeper, Graham Lambert. The midfield was made up of joint captains, Nichol and Hamilton, while up front Max Bargeton making sure the ball went into the back of the net. Felix Linzee-Gordon, Harry Fotheringham and the young Otto Bruce-Gardyne were the final three who made up the squad.
In the quarter final against King’s School, Gloucester the lads came back from 2 nil down to win 3-2 with Linzee-Gordon scoring Cargilfield’s goal of the tournament, with a reverse hit midway inside the circle into the far top corner. The semi-final was a hard ask and despite being 1 nil up the opposition managed two break away goals, finishing 2-1 to progress to the final.
The Cargilfield boys went into the 3rd/4th playoff against the always dangerous, and well respected, Chafyn Grove. The Scots were determined to go home with a medal and with Bargeton scoring a hat-trick followed by Bruce-Gardyne having the final word with a well taken goal at the back post the team from a small school in Edinburgh had taken bronze.
For Coach Colin Clarke, it was an immensely proud moment; “A lot of hard work, effort and commitment goes in to bring the boys’ hockey on”, he said, post tournament.
I am very pleased with how much effort they put in; the future of Scottish hockey is bright having watched some of the play today.”
