Scotland women draw with hosts India at FIH World Cup Qualifiers

Scotland women battled out an excellent 2-2 draw with tournament hosts India at the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, India. Scotland and India share top spot in the pool on four points before the Scots face Uruguay in their last pool match.

It was a high octane start to the contest. Scotland’s first chance brought the first goal of the game. Heather McEwan sent a deflection from a Jen Edie corner fizzing into the roof of the net. 1-0

Scotland looked comfortable despite the vast home support and managed the opening quarter well.

Early in the second quarter India equalised. The second phase of a penalty corner saw Navneet Kaur smash the ball into the bottom right corner for 1-1.

India piled on the pressure but the Scots still presented danger. Amy Costello was denied at a penalty corner and Sarah Jamieson smashed a powerful effort wide.

On the brink of half time India went 2-1 ahead from a penalty corner routine that resulted in a goalmouth scramble and forced home by Sunelita Toppo.

Scotland equalised at the start of the second half when a three pass exchange was finished off by Fiona Burnet at the far post for 2-2.

The final quarter was competitive with both sides battling hard for the win but there would be no further goals and the points were shared. Scotland are now joint-top of the pool with four points with India, and play Uruguay in their final pool match.
