Scotland women beat wales for great start to FIH World Cup Qualifiers
A comfortable 1-0 win over Wales saw Scotland women get off to a winning start at the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, India.
It was a solid start for the Scots. A good run by Ellie Mackenzie down the left opened up the Wales defence but the attack was eventually snuffed out and the danger cleared.
The opening quarter was tight was Scotland enjoying good control when on the ball but no clear chances were created by either side.
The second quarter continued to be an even affair but it was edged by Scotland when they took the lead. Amy Costello blasted a penalty corner strike into the bottom right corner to put Scotland 1-0 ahead.
Scotland began to dominate in the third quarter. Sarah Jamieson had a great chance to double Scotland’s advantage when she stole the ball and burst into the Welsh circle, but her final effort struck the outside of the right post.
Fiona Burnet and Jamieson came close to scoring a second for Scotland before an amazing solo run and shot from Mackenzie crashed against the post.
Scotland eased through the final stages of the game to a 1-0 and a great start to the tournament. Next up for Scotland is hosts India.
