Scotland women held to draw by France at Peffermill
Scotland 1-1 France (A. Costello / A. Verzura)
A late penalty stroke denied Scotland women victory at Peffermill in a contest that ended in a 1-1 draw against France.
It was a match in which Ava Wadsworth and Cat Nelli earned their first caps for Scotland.
Scotland began the contest by making good inroads down the left, and asking questions of the French defence. France enjoyed good possession as the quarter progressed but the Scots were comfortable.
The first real chance went to Scotland when Heather McEwan’s powerful shot was denied by a solid save.
Then as the opening quarter reached a close, Sarah Robertson’s shot on the turn was blocked by the goalkeeper’s leg guards to deny Scotland the lead.
Early in the second quarter Jess Buchanan produced an excellent diving save at her left near post as France opened up the Scots defence with a swift passing move.
More drama followed when an unbelievable goal line clearance by Ava Wadsworth amidst a stramash on the Scotland goal line denied what looked a certain goal for France.
Then Scotland broke the deadlock. The opener came via a powerful low penalty corner strike by Amy Costello that found the net despite the best effort of the defender on the post, to make it 1-0.
Early in the second half Scotland’s Katie Birch denied by a superb diving save to the left.
Scotland’s pressure continued and a Costello rocket from a penalty corner was well saved low at the left post as Scotland looked to double their advantage.
In the final quarter a weaving Sarah Jamieson run and shot was padded away to keep Scotland at bay once again.
Then France bagged an equaliser when a stroke was awarded and Eve Verzura dispatched it into the top left corner for 1-1, and a draw in Edinburgh.
