Western back in the groove

Milne Craig Western returned to winning ways with a
solid 2-0 win against a plucky Edinburgh University side at
Titwood.  Both sides had their chances in the opening salvoes,
but in 20 minutes Western went ahead when a cross from Holly Cram
was brilliantly deflected high past the student`s keeper by Fiona
Bruce.  It was by no means one way traffic as Edinburgh gave
as good as they got, and might have equalised if Sam Judge`s fierce
shot had not rebounded to safety off a post.

A lengthy solo run up the right by Ali Howie opened up the
student`s defence and her cross was diverted into the net by Holly
Cram for Western`s second.   Edinburgh had their chances
to get back into the game but lack of composure in front of goal
was their downfall and Western came away with the three points at
the end.

West won the under 18 inter-district trophy with a comfortable
6-2 win over East in the final at Edinburgh Academy.   An
Andrew Leslie penalty corner conversion by West was matched by a
similar strike by East`s Paul Taylor, but West reached the interval
2-1 ahead through Grant Hood.  The second half belonged to
West with a procession of goals from David Rankin, Gordon Amour,
Michael O`Donovan and Lee Morton, Aiden Docherty got a consolation
for East with an overtime penalty corner.

Four goals by Ally Vaughan was the foundation of Midland`s 7-2
victory over North to take the bronze medal.

Earlier in the day it was the tightest of finishes for a place
in the final, Midland unexpectedly defeated previously unbeaten
West in the final pool match, but missed out by the slender margin
of a single goal at the end of the day.

The upset did not look to be on the cards when West took a 3-1
half-time lead through strikes by Gordon Amour, John-Gerrard
Shepherd and Michael O`Donovan.  But Midland were not to be
denied, doubles from Jack Burton and Ross Davies along with strikes
by Robbie Swift and Kai Horne powered the underdogs into a 6-4
winning position.

East squeezed their way past North in the other pool match by
3-2, Robbie Shepherdson (2) and Danny Cain were East`s strikers
while Ross Milner and Ally Dougall got the consolations for
North.

East district took the honours in the under 16 event with a
narrow 2-1 win over West.  Cameron Good gave East the lead but
West replied before the interval with a strike from John
Reid.  The winner for East came in the second half through
Hamish Imrie who scored from a penalty corner.

In the bronze play-off, hat-tricks by Will Jack and Elliot
Sandison was the foundation of Midland`s seven goal win over
North.

In the final pool matches West finished with a perfect record
after the three games, but were taken to the wire by
Midland.   Will Jack and Charles Mearns gave Midland a
2-1 interval lead, Murray Collins getting the only strike for
West.  But the favourites gained the upper hand in the second
half with goals from Rob Harwood and Jack McKenzie to take the tie
3-2 at the death.

East had a much easier assignment by seeing off North by 8-0,
Hamish Imrie scored a first half hat-trick and there were two goals
for Cameron Good.
