U18s Shine at First Stage of Club Cup

The day kicked off with a girls pool match on the newly laid first pitch at Peffermill in Edinburgh on Sunday. Half time 0-1 to Reivers. Reivers nearly extended their lead early in the second half with some high pressure and a few early penalty corners but Inverleith defended well to keep the score at 0-1. With only 10 mins to go Inverleith GK had to pull off an outstanding save to keep the score at 0-1.  Inverleith attacked when number 8, Joanne Boyle showed some fantastic individual skill to drive the ball 30 yards which resulted in a penalty strokes and an effort to equalise that went agonisingly by the left hand post. Just the single goal that separated the two teams.

Inverleith vs Granite city wanderers – Goal early on for Inverleith with a cool finish by number 32 with only 4 mins played. With 10 mins played and GCW had an opportunity to get back into the game with a penalty corner but Inverleith defend well. Close match but the first half goal was all that separated the two teams as Inverleith finish winners.

Clydesdale vs WatsoniansIn the 6th minute the first chance saw a great little flick over the Watsonians stick in the D allowing a foot touch and a penalty corner. A nice little worked penalty and a strike by Abi Harrowell  took a deflection finding the back board. Clydesdale go 1-0 after 6 mins. Watsonians responded well with the ball ending up in the net, however a keen whistle by the umpire was already blown for a penalty corner so no goal. The resulting penalty was cleared. 13 mins gone and Clydesdale nearly doubled their lead from a penalty corner that was superbly saved by the Watsonians keeper Amber Murray. In the 19th Minute Anna Hoolaghan stretched the lead to 2-0, this being the final score in the clash.

Fjordhus Reivers vs Granite City Wanderers: Opening minutes was  fast paced and the first chance fell to Reivers who attempted a flick shot but it sailed high over the bar. Goal for Elizbeth Ruszka for GCW who flicked the ball over the defenders stick and slotted it past the GK. In the 12th minute  Reivers equalised with great play down the right hand side and the ball was squared across the face of goal and under pressure, Amy Martin glides it into the net. A couple of penalty corners followed and the ball was tumbled into the net just before the break by Emma Grieve. Straight away GCW tried and equalise but the goal was well defended and Reivers go on the attack once more, 2-1 Reivers at half time. Reivers extend their lead on the 23rd minute with a great shot destined for the bottom corner and it is made sure when Rachel Shiel touched it over. Another goal quickly followed by Jenny Sharp who had a great strike, the GK got a pad to it but it creeped over the line. Good pressure again by Reivers with some great ball work to evade three defenders. With 30 minutes gone and GCW had a penalty corner saved. Another promising attack went wide as the GCW keeper attempts to clear it clashing  with the Reivers players before just rolling wide. Penalty corner right at the end for Reivers resulted in an effort blocked the rebound dropping to Danielle Walker, game finishes 5-1 Reivers.

The opening 8 mins in Clydesdale vs Uddingston had little too few chances between the two teams and the score stayed 0-0. It was Clydesdale who broke the deadlock on the 9th minute when the Clydesdale player rounded the keeper and slotted the ball in the goal. Clydesdale nearly double their advantage on the 12th minute but the keeper stood up well and forced the ball to run out of play. After the break a penalty corner for Clydesdale that almost results in a well worked back post goal but it was just too high. With 12 mins to go and a lot of attacking pressure Clydesdale get another goal from a penalty corner. 7 mins left on the clock and it was another for Clydesdale this time from open play to make it 3-0. Another goal by Clydesdale seals the convincing win 4-0

 

Watsonians vs Uddingston – Watsonians dominated for most of the first half and had a comfortable 3-0 lead going in at the break. Second half – penalty corner for Watsonians with 3 mins remaining and they found the net again. Second half there wasn’t as much going forward for both teams, Watsonians added another to finish on top with a convincing 4-0 win.

Boys

Boys Pool C was first to take to the pitch in the Boys competition, two goals in the first half proved to be all the scoring of the game. Inverleith started the second half on the back foot and had to do some defensive work to keep Perthshire from scoring. Yellow had a chance right at the dying seconds of the game to extend their lead but it was narrowly wide. Full time result 2-0.

 

The first clash of Boys Pool A was set to be a Glasgow Derby Clydesdale vs Uddingston the game started very competitively with both teams having great opportunity’s to take the early lead. Uddingston nearly scored after a great reverse stick attempted shot was lifted over the GK but a defender tracking back to make a block saved their blushes. From this a break away by Clydesdale ensued and it took a great block from the GK to prevent a successful counter. Uddingston had a great chance in the 9th minute but the venomous effort went just wide of the left hand post. Uddingston had a goal disallowed just on half time as the ball crossed the line seconds after the buzzer sounded. Half time 0-0  Clydesdale had an opportunity just after the break with a penalty corner but the keeper made a good save with his feet to keep the score tied. Very entertaining final 10 mins to finish the game with both teams having chances to clinch the win but in the end, it was Clydesdale who advanced first, a penalty by Alasdair Richmond, Clydesdale turned he screw and doubled their lead, a well worked goal by Strauan Walker, two minutes later he made his Brace. Uddingston struggled to reply to the level of leaving the game a 3-1 win for Clydesdale.

 

Grange vs Aberdeen Grammar –   Aberdeen played well and had good early spells. Into the second half they failed to take their chances and Grange were clinical throughout the match, the first goal Jonathan Hawley scored 3 minutes in, he took  his brace 17 minutes in, his hatrick on 39 minutes and finished his goal tally in the final minute to make Grange 4-0 winners.

 

Perthshire vs Watsonians – Perthshire started well and nearly get on the score board early but a great block from the Watsonians keeper kept the ball out. Watsonians drew first blood through Fraser Haugh. Perthshire equalised just before the break with a goal in open play. After the break Watsonians put two goals passed the Perthshire keeper. However this spurred Perthshire on, it did not take long to respond, Ben Porter pulling one back after a great near post touch into the bottom right corner. The captain John Stephen stepped up and converted his hat trick,with a well struck penalty corner into the corner and a scramble in front of goal to steal the 3 points.

 

Clydesdale vs Grove Menzishill- An early goal right from the start, Struan Walker Converting a goal within the first 20 seconds. Very tight game with lots of action from both sides.  A great pass from Clydesdale 47, Matthew Lonergran found a free player in the D scores the rebound after the keeper makes the initial save. Four mins before half time and Grove nearly find a way back into the match but are denied by a great tip over from Clydesdale keeper. Grove trying hard to get back into the game but Clydesdale broke away and go up field and with a composed finish number 41 finds the bottom corner to make it 4-1. Clydesdale extended their lead to 5-1 with 10 mins left to play. A great finish from Clydesdale Struan Walker smashed the ball into the right hand side of the goal across the desperate keeper who could only watch it go by him 6-1. Only 2 mins remain and Grove Menzieshill pulled one back with time running out- 6-2.Good finishing by both teams it always looked like a high scoring game an It didn’t disappoint with 8 goals scored in the match.

 

Western Wildcats vs Aberdeen – Aberdeen opened the scoring with 6 mins gone. Western wildcats manage to get the equaliser but Aberdeen scored again just before the break, 1-2 half time. The game turned second half and it was Western Wildcats taking advantage of the extra player when one of the Aberdeen players was yellow carded, full time ending 3-2 in the cats favour.

 

Inverleith vs Watsonians a goal in favour of Watsonians in each half was what separated the two teams as it finished 0-2 in the Boys Pool C match.

 

Break through occurred on the 5 min in the Uddingston v Grove Menzieshill match. Uddingston broke through the middle and played a good ball out left where the Uddingston player played a superb reverse stick pass back post for a tap in by Gavin MacKenzie. Uddingston doubled their lead on the 10th minute after a well worked penalty corner finds the net by Louis Gardiner. With 17 mins left Uddingston made it 3-0. Grove Menzieshill tried to get back into the match and with a few penalty corners, however the Uddingston defence were up to the task keeping a clean sheet.

 

Grange vs Western Wildcats. Western Wildcats went two up but Grange fought their way back into the game in the second half through Jonathan Hauley. The equaliser came from Jacob Tweedie. The game finished sharing the points.
