U14 Girls Inter Districts
On what was another warm day in the Capital, Peffermill played host to the U14 Girls Inter Districts.
The day began with the pool matches which varied in results across the day. Some very close matches and some dominating performances by the districts.
Pool A was won by West after 3 comfortable wins against Highland, WestEastMid and South West. The runner up in this group was South West who dominanted their first two games but fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of West.
Midland proved victorious in Pool B as they finished level on points with East but had scored 1 vital goal more. Both teams finishing on 7 points after 2 wins and then a 1-1 draw when they came against each other. East were runners up in this pool and therefore progressed to the semi final where they would face a strong West side.
The semi finals saw West triumph over East after a penalty shoot out. The match ended 1-1 and it was West’s Jenna Morton who sealed the penalty win for the West.
In the other semi final Midland took on South West. In what was a another close match, it was penalties to decide the fate on our finalists after a 1-1 draw. This time round it was Midland who proved victorious and progressed to the final.
Fighting it out for 5th place was North against the hybrid team of WestEastMid. The hybrid team dominated the early stages of the match but it was in the latter periods of the game that North fought back. With a strong performance from the northeners once again the match would be decided on penalties. WestEastMid came out on top with a 3-2 victory in the shootout which allowed them to claim 5th place and North settling with 6th.
Meanwhile on pitch 2 South faced Highland in the 7th and 8th play off match. Both sides were looking for their first win of the day. It was South who claimed 7th after winning 4-0 over the highlanders who were extremely hard working throughout the day.
Pitched 2 then played host to the 3rd and 4th place play off match which saw East defeat South West 2-0. Both of these teams played tremendous hockey throughout the day and credit should be given to all players for their efforts.
The final arrived which saw West take on Midland. West were hoping to regain their title from the previous year. Midland took the lead after 3 minutes through Ellie Stott. From then on it was a very close match with both teams playing good hockey. West had the momentum going into the closing stages of the match and it looked as though an equaliser was on the cards. However Midland broke clear with 2 minutes to go and Stephanie Craig hammered a low shot beyond the West goalkeeper.
The final whistle went and the delight on the Midland coaches and players faces was hard to miss. They thoroughly deserved their victory after all the performances throughout the day.
