Three debut goals seal win for Scotland U21 men

It was a Scotland U21 men’s debut to remember for Jamie Golden and Struan Walker as they both scored to give the Scots a 3-2 win over Wales in the first of three games in Glasgow. Golden struck twice and Walker bagged the other in the win as the Scots prepare for U21 EuroHockey Championship II next month.

It was a tough contest against a good Wales side and both sides went toe-to-toe from the off.

Jamie Golden put Scotland ahead when he picked up the ball and drove forward, took on the centre back and hammered the ball home to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Wales responded with a goal when the ball was fired into the Scotland D; it looped into the air and was volleyed home for a great finish to level the scores. The goal meant the tie went in 1-1 at half time.

Scotland retook the lead in the second half and it was 16 year old Struan Walker on his debut that gave his side the advantage. Walker beat two players and fired the ball into the back of the net on the reverse to make it 2-1.

A penalty flick gave Wales another equaliser but Scotland wouldn’t be denied the win.

There were penalty corner for both sides. The Scots defended theirs well but it was from one penalty corner opportunity that Golden bagged his second for Scotland. The Dundonian sent a delightful drag flick into the back of the net with a goal that would turn out to be the winner.

It was a good start to the series for Scotland with plenty to build on for the matches ahead. The two meet again tomorrow at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre at 2:30pm.
