Simpson brace sinks Western

A second half brace by former Olympian Rhona Simpson was
the catalyst in Giffnock`s thrilling 4-3 win over city rivals Milne
Craig Western in the game of the day in the women`s Subway national
league.

Western started the more positive side and took an early lead
when international striker Holly Cram scooped the ball home after
the Giffnock goalkeeper saved the initial shot from Fiona
Bruce.  But back came Giffnock, a slack pass out of the
Western defence was picked up by Simpson and her cross was tapped
home by Lynn Owen for the equaliser.   Western had their
noses in front at the interval, the goal was created by a cross
from Cram that was brilliantly deflected home by Nicola
Pitticas.

Immediately after the break Giffnock made it 2-2, again the
Western defence failed to clear the danger, the ball fell to
Simpson who drove a fierce low shot past Amy Gibson.  Western
took the lead for the third time at a penalty corner when Catriona
Ralph`s shot went in off the pads of Giffnock keeper Lauren
Grant.  Within two minutes the home side were again back on
level terms, a well-worked penalty corner ended with Jaclyn Fortune
stroking the ball home for 3-3.

This set up a dramatic finale, Giffnock created the opening up
the right, the first shot was blocked by Amy Gibson but Simpson
followed up to volley the ball into the back of the net to put her
side ahead for the first time in the match.  Western had a
glorious chance to get a share of the points in the final minute,
but Ralph`s effort from the spot rebounded off a post.

League leaders Grove Menzieshill confirmed their pole position
with a eight goal win over Grange.  The heroine was Scotland
captain Linda Clement with four, including two from set pieces,
Ailsa Wyllie got a couple and the others came from Louise Carroll
from the spot and Louise Baxter.

VWS Dundee Wanderers kept their second spot with a 5-1 win over
bottom side CALA Edinburgh.   Heather Elder got both
Wanderers` goals in the first half, Amy Brodie replied for
CALA.  The Taysiders stretched their lead in the second half
with a brace from former CALA player Fiona Plain while Julie Bryce
completed the scoring.

Four goals from Scottish international striker Sam Judge gave
Edinburgh University a 6-1 win over GHK.  Western Wildcats
continued their good run of form with a 2-2 draw with Glynhill
Kelburne at Bellahouston.

West are in pole position in the under 18s inter-district
tournament at Peffermill with back to back victories over North and
East.

West opened with a 5-3 win over North, James Ross got two and
the others came from Michael O`Hara, David Clark and Gordon Amour,
North`s strikes emanated from Ally Dougal and two from Hugh
Cruikshank.

West found themselves 2-1 down against East at the interval in
their second match, Robbie Shepherdson and Danny Cain scoring for
East while Glynhill Kelburne`s Lee Morton replied.  But Morton
was West`s hero in the second half with a hat-trick while Michael
O`Donovan got the other turned the tables as East failed to add to
their total.

Danny Cain`s three goals was the foundation of East`s 5-1 win
over Midland in their first match, the other goals came from Peter
Akyol and Aiden Docherty.

In the other match Midland scored a 3-0 victory over North,
Fergus Sandison, Ally Vaughan and Jack Burton were on target.

11-0, John Reid scored a hat-trick while Fabien Goldie got
two.   West then saw off East by 2-0, Charlie Adams
scored in the first half while Jack McAlister made it two after the
interval.

A hat-trick from Hamish Imrie and a strike by Stuart
Hatton  was the foundation of East`s 4-2 win over Midland in
their opening fixture, Elliot Sandison got both Midland`s
goals.   Midland recovered in their second encounter to
beat North 6-1, Michael Berry got three, the others came from
Callum Boag, Julius Soeding and Charles Mearns.
