Scotland women to play for bronze after losing to England in FIH World Cup Qualifiers

A 2-0 semi-final defeat to England will see Scotland women play Italy for the bronze medal, and a spot at the FIH World Cup, in the third place playoff at the FIH World Cup Qualifiers on Saturday.

If Scotland qualify for the World Cup it will be the first time since 2002 in New Zealand.

The opening quarter found England enjoy more attacking threat but Scotland comfortable in defence.

England’s best chance came when Jess Buchanan made a stunning save from point blank range to deny Holly Hunt the opener.

Scotland responded and Fiona Burnet surged down the right before she picked out Ellie Mackenzie in front of goal, but she was denied by an excellent save to keep the scores level.

The English pressure continued into the second quarter and brought the opening goal. A pass into the circle for Lottie Bingham saw her pick her spot in the top left corner for 1-0.

Then it went to 2-0 when Bingham forced the ball for Darcy Bourne who scooped home into the right corner of the net.

Scotland began to play back into the contest in the second half and won a number of penalty corner opportunities.

In the final quarter Scotland came close when Jenny Eadie blasted a penalty corner towards the bottom corner but it was well saved.

Two Scotland players were yellow carded missing a chunk of the final quarter and England managed to see the game out and book a place in the final. Scotland play for bronze and a place in the World Cup on Saturday.
