Scotland men’s squad announced for EuroHockey Championship II
The Scotland men’s squad has been announced for EuroHockey Championship II in Dublin on 23-29 July.
It’s a huge summer of competition for the squad as Scotland travel to at the National Sports Campus, Dublin, to battle for promotion to the EuroHockey Championships. Eight teams have qualified for the tournament with Scotland featuring alongside Ireland; Italy; Ukraine; Czech Republic; Portugal; Turkey; and Switzerland.
Switzerland will be Scotland’s first opponents before they meet Italy and Turkey to complete the matches in Pool B, ahead of the latter stages of the tournament.
Scotland men build up to the tournament with confidence after recently enjoying a successful three-match test series against Wales, in Cardiff. The Scots won the final game of the series 4-1, after 0-0 and 3-3 draws. The matches saw a number of young players emerge into the squad, with five athletes (Alistair Douglas; AJ Lochrin; Fraser Moran; Tommy Austin; and James Drummond) now set to earn their first caps in Dublin.
Head Coach Jonny Caren said, “The greater squad made my first selection for a major tournament a very difficult task. Everyone has been working hard, and pushing each other week-by-week, to bring the best out of this group.
“This mind set of continual improvement was evident in Cardiff last week as we grew game-by-game. We now need to apply the same process to our final preparation camp, and into the European’s, taking strides forward every game we have together, so we are sharp, come the business end of the tournament.
“With five athletes receiving their first caps at the Europeans, this brings a fresh approach to the team, that is also perfectly balanced with the experience of players such as Alan Forsyth, Lee Morton, Duncan Riddell and Tommy Alexander. The games against Wales showed that as a new group, when we connect well, we are hard to beat and exciting going forward.”
