Scotland men win last match of Men’s EuroHockey Qualifier D; Wales gain qualification to EuroHockey Championship 2023
Scotland 8-0 Switzerland
Scotland secured second spot in Men’s EuroHockey Qualifier D after an 8-0 victory over Switzerland in Uddingston, and will play in Men’s EuroHockey Championship II next year.
The Scots came out all guns blazing and pegged Switzerland back from the outset.
The best chances in the opening quarter went to Jamie Golden with three penalty corner efforts; two went just wide of the mark and one was superbly saved under the crossbar to keep the scores even.
Two attempts by Alan Forsyth were also denied by superb diving saves to keep the Blue Sticks at bay.
In the second quarter Scotland’s pressure eventually paid off when Lee Morton put Scotland 1-0 ahead right before half time with a great run and finish. Morton went on a weaving run into the D past three players and then picked out the far left corner with his finish.
The goals began to flow in the third quarter with three strikes in quick succession. First, a tremendous strike into the top left corner by David Nairn put Scotland 2-0 ahead.
Golden then made it 3-0 for Scotland men with a penalty corner before Golden struck again with a drag flick to make it 4-0.
Struan Walker added his name to the score sheet right at the end of the quarter with a shot on the turn to make it 5-0.
In the final quarter a tremendous deflected finish into the roof of the net by Rob Harwood made it 6-0, before Morton struck his second of the match to make it 7-0.
To finish up the scoring Forsyth struck to make it 8-0. A long ball to Forsyth found him in space and he slid the ball past the keeper for the goal.
Wales 7-0 Gibraltar
Wales won Men’s EuroHockey Qualifier D after a 7-0 victory over Gibraltar in Uddingston.
Gareth Furlong continued his incredible goal scoring run with two goals in the opening quarter. Furlong sent two penalty corners crashing into the net to give Wales a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter Furlong bagged his hat trick with another expertly converted corner to put Wales 3-0 ahead.
Right before half time James Carson added his name to the score sheet with a strike after Jacob Draper picked him out in the middle of the circle, before Luke Hawker swept the ball home from close range early in the second half.
Fred Newbold made it 6-0 in the final quarter before Daniel Kyriakides struck a seventh for Wales.
