Hillhead and Edinburgh University will contest this season`s Men’s Scottish Cup Final

Hillhead will contest the men’s Scottish Cup final for the first time in three years after a comfortable 3-0 win over Dunfermline Carnegie.

Hillhead coach Yan Adams assessed: “We made things difficult for ourselves but the result was never in doubt.”

Early chances fell to Hillhead`s Fraser Ward and Matt Carder while Carnegie`s Gary Clark saw his low shot sail wide of the target.  However, it was Hillhead who broke the deadlock with a trade mark penalty corner strike by Andrew Sinclair.

Ten minutes Hillhead had doubled their tally when Murray Ross finished from close range…and that`s how it stood at the interval.

Hillhead laboured a little in the second half and were on occasions a bit fortunate not to concede, but the destiny of the tie was secured with five minutes to go with a Matt Carder over-the-shoulder, behind-the-back hit off a deflection at a penalty corner. And that was that…Hillhead were in the final.

Western Wildcats 1-1(6-7) Edinburgh University

Perhaps rather surprisingly the tie was goalless for most of the contest.  Wildcats` Tommy Austin saw his shot shave the bar while Cameron Weir also came close, at the other end Iain McFadden came close for the students at a couple of penalty corners.

Wildcats finally broke the deadlock in the final quarter, with eight minutes to go Cameron Moran deflected the ball in at the back post after a shot from brother Fraser – a brotherly strike!

Just as it seemed as if that would secure Wildcats progress into the final Edinburgh retaliated with a flurry of penalty corners but failed to beat Gavin Sommerville in the Western goal, but with 90 seconds left the students finally levelled with a successful strike from Sam Hunt.

And so on to the shoot-out. The first volley ended four each, and the sudden death was tied at 2-2 until Rory Steedman finally made it 7-6 and the students were on their way to the men’s final.

 

Premiership

Meanwhile, in the lower six of the women`s Premiership St Andrews University and Grange drew 0-0 in a catch-up fixture.  The result leaves St Andrews top of that competition and Grange just below them three points adrift.
