Scotland Show Determination Despite 2-0 Defeat to Argentina in Final World Cup Pool Match

Scotland Women returned to action at the Belfius Hockey Arena for their third match of the FIH Hockey World Cup, facing Argentina with a determination to finish their challenging pool stage with a strong performance.

Scotland started the game as the more dominant side, controlling possession and putting Argentina under pressure early on. Despite their strong opening, the Scots were unable to find an opportunity to take a shot at goal.

With just four minutes remaining in the first quarter an error from Scotland gave Argentina their first penalty corner of the match. Goalkeeper Jess Buchanan denied the initial effort, but Argentina reacted quickest to the rebound and Maria Granatto fired the ball into the net to give her side a 1-0 lead.

Despite their one goal advantage, Argentina started the second quarter on the back foot when Victoria Miranda was shown a green card. However, they soon won their second penalty corner, but the resulting shot went wide of the goal.

Argentina continued to threaten and earned their third penalty corner just five minutes later, but Scotland stood firm as Millie Steiger produced an impressive charge down to deny the Argentine attack.

A fourth penalty corner followed just a minute later but once again Scotland managed to prevent Argentina from extending their one goal lead. Argentina earned a fifth penalty corner in the final three minutes before half time, but the opportunity was missed, leaving the score unchanged heading into the break.

Halfway through the third quarter, Scotland were handed a positive opportunity to push forward in attack when Argentina’s Eugenia Trinchinetti was shown a green card.

However, Argentina struck while being a player down with Lara Casas receiving the credits for extending her sides advantage. Scotland questioned the goal but following a review, the goal was awarded. Argentina moved into a 2-0 lead while Scotland lost their referral in the process.

Early in the final quarter, Argentinian goal scorer Casas was shown a yellow card, leaving Argentina temporarily down to 10 players and gifting Scotland an opportunity to put themselves on the scoresheet before the final whistle.

Argentina ultimately secured a 2-0 victory, but the scoreline fails to reflect Scotland’s determination and hard-fought performance, with plenty for the Scots to be proud of.
