Edinburgh University impress against Wanderers

An ever improving Edinburgh University team, responding to the
promptings of player/coach Sam Judge, overcame VWS Dundee Wanderers
4-2 at Riverside Park today in the Subway National League with
another performance full of promise.

University shocked Iain Strachan’s team within the first minute
when Camilla Lyttle caught the defence napping to open the scoring.
However Wanderers composed themselves and Fiona Plain’s straight
strike set piece fizzed past keeper Grace Cuthill levelling matters
going into the break.

Once again University took the lead straight from the restart
with Lyttle repeating the dose.  The home side recovered for a
second time when Vikki Bunce dived to put the final touch to a
cross from the right. However the Edinburgh team responded when
following an excellent set piece routine, Laura Protheroe netted
from close range.

Minutes Judge took full advantage of naïve Wanderers’ defending
to add the finishing touches to a slick build up.  University
were better all round and fully deserved the three points. Coach
Strachan on the other hand will be looking for a vast improvement
in performance levels before the visit to face Giffnock next
weekend.   

Milne Craig Western maintained second spot with a comfortable
4-0 win at Bellahouston over a Glynhill Hotel Kelburne side proving
difficult to overcome this season. Coach Neil Menzies tried a
formation change which he felt was not working even although the
visitors led at the interval through a Catriona Ralph deflected set
piece effort.

Menzies said “We reverted back to our normal system after the
interval and I felt this gave us a much more solid attacking base.”
A Holly Cram second half hat-trick would appear to back that view
up and sealed the win keeping Western within touching distance of
strong favourites Grove Menzieshill.

Meanwhile Grove remained in pole position defeating Western
Wildcats 4-0 with the goals coming from Louise Campbell (2), Leigh
Fawcett and Linda Clement as they continue their dominance and
unbeaten run as the league approaches the midway point.

Giffnock remain third with a two goal victory over CALA
Edinburgh with Rhona Simpson and Kareena Marshall on the score
sheet in a game Simpson described as a “scrappy affair.”

The final game between the bottom two saw the honours shared
with a 3-3 draw between GHK and Grange EL. The result tightens up
the relegation area with Western Wildcats and CALA Edinburgh also
in troubled waters.
