Committed Scotland lose to Germany on return to the women’s FIH World Cup

Despite a good and committed performance Scotland women lost 3-0 to Germany in their first match at the 2026 FIH World Cup. It was a day of history as the Scots stepped onto the pitch for the first time in 24 years.

Scotland settled into the game and managed the early German threat well, though they struggled to push out of their own half. As the quarter reached a close Eve Pearson sent Rebecca Birch racing down the right but the German rear guard dealt with the danger and cleared the ball.

The quarter came to a close with the sides even and Scotland pressing well.

Early in the second quarter Germany won their first penalty corner of the match and it was one Charlotte Watson shut down well.

The German threat stepped up when Linnea Weidemann turned and shot but Jess Buchanan was a match to it and padded the ball clear.

Germany then took the lead. They carved Scotland open down the right and Yani Zhong had the time and space to fizz the ball into the roof of the net for 1-0.

It quickly went to 2-0 when a Johanna Hachenberg zipped pass in from the left was unfortunately deflected into the roof of the net off Millie Steiger.

Scotland started the second half well and looked to make some inroads through Ellie Mackenzie and Watson, but the German threat was always present.

Ruth Blaikie came agonisingly close to pulling one back after a tremendous pass across goal by Mackenzie, but Blaikie couldn’t connect and the ball zipped clear.

Then Sarah Jamieson came close with a deflection that went narrowly past the left post as Scotland got a grip of the match.

The Scots were in their groove in the final quarter and took the game to Germany but it would be the Germans who would snatch a late goal.

A well-worked penalty corner routine was returned to the injector Lynn Krings to deflect home at the post for 3-0, and complete the scoring.
