Another 19 goals in day 2 of the youth Summer 4 Nations in Glasgow

Belgium U16 Girls 5-5 England U16 Girls

The goals continued in Glasgow as Belgium and England U16 girls battled out a highly entertaining 5-5 draw.

Glasgow Green was awash by blazing sunshine when the first game got underway and the contest was only 90 seconds old when an early penalty corner chance went the way of England. The chance would bring the game’s first goal. A solid initial strike from Biba Mills hit the post and the rebound was turned in by Lettie Hughes.

Belgium responded by enjoying steady possession in the following minutes and were awarded a penalty corner of their own. A second corner quickly followed and Emilie Verhees scored with a wonderful reverse stick shot across the goal to equalise.

Before long the Belgians were in front the goal came courtesy of Maylin Balon-Perin who popped the ball home from close range finish for 2-1 to Belgium

As the opening quarter reached an end Agathe Favart made it 3-1 to Belgium with a penalty stroke dispatched into the bottom right corner.

In the second quarter a second stroke was awarded to Belgium and this time Favart buried the ball into the top left corner for 4-1.

Despite the score line England was far from out of the contest, and dug deep to try and fight back into the match, but Belgium was strong at the back and held England off.

England started the second half well and were soon rewarded with goals. First Isla Campbell scooped the ball home from the centre of the circle to pull it back to 4-2.

Then, a counter down the left a few minutes later, was finished at the far post by Mills for 4-3.

Before long, it was 4-4. A stroke was awarded to England and Mills dispatched it effortlessly into the bottom left corner.

It was set up for a huge final quarter and first blood went to Belgium with a fierce drive across goal and into the far corner. 5-4.

England struck back quickly and a sensational Mills drag flick into the top right corner equalised at 5-5.

Both teams went for broke to try and find a winner but there would be no further goals and the points were shared.

Germany U16 Girls 7-2 Scotland Emerging Girls

Germany U16 Girls made it two wins from two in the Summer 4 Nations at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre with a 7-2 win over Scotland Emerging Girls.

The game was 42 seconds old when Germany broke the deadlock through a close range finish after a swift attack down the right.

Scotland regrouped and Amy Edgar tore forward on a stealthy solo run, beating two players, but the ball trailed behind her as she rounded the goalkeeper and the danger was cleared.

The Germans were ruthless, however. Franziska Pabsch soon launched a powerful drag flick into the top right corner for 2-0.

Maddie Shepherd was on form in goal for Scotland, making a number of saves to halt waves of German attacks.

Still, Germany would find the net again in the first quarter, when a corner routine was finished off by Nelli Zeitler. 3-0.

A rotation of goalkeeper for the second quarter saw Morven Begg called into action with a superb double save to prevent a fourth for Germany.

Then Scotland switched up a gear and took the game to Germany. A swift counter opened up the chance for Izzy Hogarth to strike at goal, but her effort was blocked by the keeper’s leg guards.

Good pressure by Scotland was rewarded with a goal. A corner rebound fell kindly for Gabriella Fontenla who blasted the ball low into the net. 3-1.

The second half saw Germany get off to a great start. A counter allowed Birthe Reitemeier to smash a low effort against the backboard to make it 4-1 for the Germans.

Zeitler bagged her second goal of the game, and Germany’s fifth, after pouncing on an error and powered the ball into the net from the top of the circle. 5-1.

A lovely penalty corner exchange opened the Germans up but a superb save low to the right denied Scotland another goal.

Germany was awarded a stroke as the end of the third quarter approached but Reitemeier’s effort struck the left post and bounced clear.

With seven seconds of the quarter remaining Seifert struck again with a deflection into the roof of the net for 6-1.

Still, Scotland kept battling. Sophie Davidson pulled one back for Scotland midway through the final quarter with a lovely lifted finish after a counter down the right. 6-2.

It went to 7-2 despite a simply outstanding reaction save by Begg. Diving to her right to stop a close range shot that had already gone past her, the rebound fell for Zeitler to finish for Germany, to complete the scoring.
