Another pulsating performance by Azets Clydesdale Western in Alanya

CLYDESDALE WESTERN  9   OLTEN 1

Azets Clydesdale Western produced another strong performance on day 2 at the EuroHockey Club Trophy 11 in Alanya with a roll-over 9-1 win over Swiss side Olten to remain in pole position in their pool.

After two commanding victories in the pool so far Clydesdale look strong for qualify for Sunday`s final and promotion, but there is still work to do.   The final pool fixture is against Welsh side Cardiff & Met, they are three points adrift after today`s 2-2 draw with Gaziantep from Turkey.    That means that Clydesdale need to avoid defeat against Cardiff to seal that final place, but defeat would let Cardiff overtake the Scots.

However, the start to the match was perhaps not in the script, Olten had three early penalty corners and Nadine Pfister converted one to put her side ahead.  Revenge was both swift and deadly, once again Fiona Semple got Clydesdale`s opening goal at a penalty corner to be followed by an open play strike from Ailish Dunlop to put the Scots 2-1 ahead seconds after going behind.

Clydesdale advanced their cause in the second quarter with a strike from Jenny Eadie for a 3-1 lead by the interval.

Then the floodgates opened with a procession of goals from Clydesdale, it started with Jika Nyirenda a minute into the half, then Bronwyn Shields, followed by strikes from Jenny Eadie and Sophie Hinds inside a minute to advance the tally to 7-1.   The third quarter ended with another goal from youngster Ailish Dunlop for Clydesdale`s eighth.

Olten were saved the humiliation of double figures as the final quarter only produced a second goal for Jika Nyirenda, and that brought her tournament tally to five and put her to the top of the goalscoring list.
