All Edinburgh Women`s Cup Final: Uni v Watsonians

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY   2-1   CLYDESDALE WESTERN

Clydesdale Western’s recent losing streak continued when they exited from the Women’s Scottish Cup after going down 2-1 to Edinburgh University

Early chances were few but the students thought they had taken an early lead when Itske Hooftman forced the ball over the line only to be disallowed for a back stick in the build-up. At the other end Clydesdale’s Emma McGregor saw her effort frustrated by a goal line clearance. And so it was goalless at the interval

In the third quarter Ava Graham had a chance to open the scoring but she was denied by Edinburgh’s keeper Lucy Harris, but Clydesdale did in fact take the lead not long after. A penalty corner shot was deflected into the students net by Millie Steiger.

Clydesdale’s aspirations to reach the final were frustrated in the final quarter. Firstly a long searching ball into the circle found Hooftman and she slipped the ball under the keeper for the equaliser.

The winner was down to a piece of personal brilliance from Cat Nelli, she received the ball on the left side of the circle and swivelled to fire a low shot into the net.

And that was that – it was Edinburgh University who moved into the final

WILDCATS 0-3  WATSONIANS

Watsonians were first up on the scoring front after a quick attack down the left which found Milly Berndes-Cade who fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Despite some continuous Watsonians pressure it was the Wildcats who created a clear chance, at a penalty corner won by Lexie MacMillan the resulting shot from Fran Lonergan was saved.

However, Watsonians managed to double their lead when a long ball was allowed to find its way to Sarah Jamieson, she played it past the keeper for Fiona Burnet to finish.

The Cats were anxious to get back into the contest at the start of the second half and several chances came their way, Lexie MacMillan won a penalty corner which was eventually blocked. Alex Stuart arrived at the back post but her goal-bound effort skipped wide, and then a lob effort from Lonergan was saved under the crossbar by Lucy Camlin – so not goals ensued.

As the half progressed the Cats were again on the offensive, Stuart`s ferocious shot failed to find the target, then Millie Skidmore deflected just wide – but Watsonians survived.

In the final quarter Wildcats replaced their keeper with an additional outfield player, but the gamble didn`t work as a Watsonians counter-attack left Sarah Jamieson with the simple task of rolling the ball into the empty net for a third.
