Goals Galore in the Scottish Plate Semi Finals
On Saturday morning Inverleith faced Clydesdale in the Men’s Scottish Plate in Glasgow, while Uddingston faced Dundee Wanderers at Peffermill.
In the Glasgow sunshine it was goals galore, early goals for both teams meant it was 2-2 by the end of the first quarter. Harry Leggitt opened the scoring in the first minute for Clydesdale, before Charlie Jack equalised from a penalty corner. Less than a minute later Clydesdale were back in front thanks to Euan Lindsay. Finlay Duncan levelled matters again with a neat finish. It would remain that way until almost half time when Clydesdale delivered a doubly whammy with two goals in two minutes from Euan Anderson and then Andrew Allan from a penalty corner.
The third quarter was a quieter period, both teams exchanged chances but there was no goals until a final moment penalty corner gave Charlie Jack his second of the game. A slender lead for Clydesdale going into the final quarter, and the opened up a two goal lead as Harry Leggitt grabbed his second of the day. At 5-3 with ten minutes to go, it was far from finished and Charlie Jack slammed home his hat trick to reduce the deficit. Inverleith piled on the pressure and Jack was on hand to level the game in the final seconds, his fourth penalty corner goal of the match.
The match went to a shootout and Inverleith prevailed with a 4-3 win after six penalties each.
It was not just goals galore in Glasgow as over in Edinburgh, Uddingston and Dundee Wanderers also ended in a shootout after sharing eight goals. Wanderers led the after the first quarter, a goal from Brown in the 14th minute separating the sides. By half time they were still in the lead, Uddingston equalised through Wilson before Brown got his second of the game to level the tie. The second half continued in the same vein, Uddingston equalised through Halliday from a penalty corner, Ross put Wanderers back in front before Halliday equalised again as the third quarter ended 3-3.
Into the final quarter and both teams pushed for a winner, with nine minutes to play Ross scored his second of the game as the Dundee side led 4-3. The final goal of the match came with two minutes to go, Halliday finished off a hat trick of penalty corner goals to make it 4-4. In the shootout both sides missed their first two, before Wanderers scored three in a row to take a 3-1 win and progress to face Inverleith in the final.
On Sunday the women’s Scottish Plate semi finals took place in Glasgow. Glasgow University were first up against GHK. It was a close first quarter, GHK had most of the possession and the took the lead through a penalty stroke, Lucy Williamson providing the finish. By half time they had raced into a four goal lead despite the students having some chances of their own. Williamson added her second of the game from a penalty corner before Fiona Semple added a third on the 30 minute mark. A further penalty corner just before half time secured Williamson’s hat trick. Both teams had chances in the third quarter but there was no fiuther goals until halfway through the final quarter when Joanne Boyle added GHK’s fifth goal.
They will face Edinburgh University 2s in the final later this month after the University side had a comfortable win over a young Perthshire side. Goals from from Abu-Rajab and Sproul meant the score was 2-0 at the end of the first quarter and further goals from Hill and a double from Elliott had the half time score standing at 5-0. A penalty corner from Elliott secured her hat trick at the end of the third period, before Hill grabbed her second and the students seventh. Perthshire did get on the scoresheet thanks to a penalty corner strike from Millie Cassels, but it is the students who progress in the competition.
