Women’s Scottish Cup semi-finals bring goals as final places are secured

Watsonians 4-0 Hillhead

Watsonians booked their place in the Women’s Scottish Cup Final with a solid 4-0 victory over Hillhead at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The first opportunity of the match came when Sarah Jamieson powered into the Hillhead circle but her effort hit the side netting.

Jamieson wouldn’t be denied for long and she surged past two defenders before sliding a low effort into the net for 1-0.

It was almost a second for Jamieson when she drove into the Hillhead circle again and fizzed a low shot just wide of the left post.

Hillhead battled hard and dug deep to press high up the pitch early in the second quarter.

Hillhead nearly equalised through a penalty corner routine but Watsonians managed to clear the danger as shirts piled in on goal.

It prompted Watsonians to counter and it allowed Katie McCallum to slip a low shot into the net for 2-0.

An excellent run by Katie Crawford for Watsonians sent Jamieson into the circle but the keeper stood up well to block the effort.

The third goal for Watsonians came in the third quarter and it came when Susan Hamilton powered a low effort into the net from the top of the D.

The final quarter saw Watsonians manage the game well and keep control of the ball, and Hillhead at bay.

In the final moments Watsonians struck a fourth through Emily Dark to finish off the game and put her side into the final.

Edinburgh University 5-0 Western Wildcats

A goal-laden performance by Edinburgh University saw them win 5-0 against Western Wildcats in the Women’s Scottish Cup Semi-Final.

It was a tight opening to the contest with both sides cancelling each other out. Jess Ross was influential for Edinburgh University, while Jika Nyirenda looked a threat. Western Wildcats had good possession through Lucy Findlay and Kate Holmes but to no avail.

Early in the second quarter Edinburgh University was rewarded for its possession play when Jess Ross opened the scoring. Nyirenda powered into the D and the ball was eventually bundled home by Ross in a packed circle.

Katie Robertson came close to doubling the lead for Edinburgh University with a strike from the top of the D, but it was well saved by the keeper.

The second goal came soon enough. Robertson picked out Nyirenda in the circle who turned and buried the ball into the net for 2-0.

Moments later and Nyirenda struck again, making it 3-0 with a lift over the goalkeeper on a rebound.

Wildcats began to ask questions of the Edinburgh University defence, and those questions were answered by a wall of red shirts. Then an Edinburgh counter attack allowed Amy Brodie to run through on goal but the final shot bounced off the pads of the keeper.

In the final quarter Heather Elder made a tremendous save to deny a fourth goal for Edinburgh University. Louise Campbell picked out Brodie who unleashed a powerful low effort only to be stopped by the diving Elder.

The fourth goal came soon enough and it was Zara Kennedy who deflected a Robertson drive into the circle, into the net. 4-0.

Brodie got her name on the scoresheet when she finished off a penalty corner routine when she latched onto the third rebound, and smashed a looping ball above her head down and into the net. 5-0.
