Women’s Masters World Cup Progress
Scotland’s over 45’s Women are currently in Rotterdam competing in the Masters World Cup. Our roving reporters Hazel Hurst, Janice Moir and Jill Reid have provided us with an update on their progress to date.
6th June – Scotland Women 45s vs Wales
Scotland over 45s got off to a flying start in their opening game of the World Masters in Rotterdam with Lillian McNab scoring a brilliant solo effort in the 4th minute of her debut game. Throughout the game Scotland had the better possession but Wales, always dangerous on the break, equalised in the 18th minute. However, Scotland began to control the game and scored again through Joyce Robertson via open play, ending the half time 2-1 up. The second half again saw Scotland play good hockey scoring a third through Gail Nelson in the 46th minute. The Welsh put pressure on the Scots who gave away possession allowing Wales to score two more and the game finished 3-3. It was disappointing for Scotland to tie the game, however, a very good start for the team in very hot conditions and it gave them confidence for their next games.
7th June – Scotland Women 45s vs Australia
Scotland always knew this would be a tough match against Australia 40’s, who have been on a tour ending at the World Masters Tournament. The game started at a fierce pace with Scotland defending superbly. As Scotland adjusted to pace the Australians grew frustrated by the Scots superb efforts and organisation, however it was disappointing when Australia scored from a deflected penalty corner in the 27th minute and another penalty corner in the 30th minute, ending the half 0-2 down. In the second half, once again Scotland’s organisation and work rate was superb and they had a few chances to score but Australia defended well. Beth McLeod in goals, had a fantastic game and Jackie Wilson stopped a ball in the air on the goal line to prevent Australia scoring again. The Scots were well rewarded for their efforts, helping keep a clean sheet in the second half. The final result of 0-2 reflected great play from the Scots and bolstered the squad’s confidence going forward.
8th June – Scotland Women 45s vs RSA/ZIM
Scotland unfortunately took to the field without injured captain Ali Ramsay, however they started with hopes high and very quickly began to dominate putting pressure on the RSA/Zimbabwe defence. The RSA/Zim team defended well and despite Scotland earning penalty corners the Scots failed to convert their advantage and the half time score was 0-0. The second half saw the opposition coming more into the game although Scotland were still edging possession. RSA/ZIM took advantage when the Scots lost concentration thinking the whistle had blown and scored a late goal. Despite intense pressure from the Scots in the dying minutes of the game it ended 0-1. It was a disappointing result for the team considering their high work rate and possession, however, they look forward to the rest of the tournament.
Today Scotland will play in a round robin tournament against Netherlands 45s, Wales 45s and RSA/ZIM 45s and the lowest 40s team from the first section games. Following the performances against the younger opposition in their first three games, Scotland are eager to get started and looking forward with confidence to the medal games.
