Western defeated in the EHL
After Saturday`s powerful 3-1 win over Czech champions Plzen-Litice to reach the quarter-finals of the EuroHockey League in Barcelona, Western Wildcats came back to earth after going down 11-0 to crack Dutch side Kampong.
It was always going to be a tough assignment but the Dutch side showed no mercy.
It was ominous when Jip Janssen slotted home a penalty corner in only two minutes and that was followed four minutes later by a second from open play by Duco Telgenkamp, and that was the score at the end of the first quarter. Silas Lageman added a third in next quarter and that is how it stood at the interval.
Talgenkamp scored a fourth in the third quarter. But the final quarter was a disaster for the Wildcats as Kampong added seven more in the 15 minutes with Talgenkamp scoring four in the end.
Despite the setback, with Saturday`s victory Wildcats will have picked up some valuable EHL ranking points to advance Scotland`s cause in future tournaments.
Meanwhile, in the Scottish Cup most of the Premiership clubs, both men and women, progressed to the next round with some ease and with huge scores.
However, the most interesting tie was the women`s all-Premiership encounter between Grange and last year`s finalists Edinburgh University. In normal time the game ended 2-2, Hanna McKie at a penalty corner and Heather Croll scored for Grange with Louise Campbell and Jika Nyirenda replying for the students. But in the ensuing shoot-out it was Grange who triumphed 3-2 to advance to the next round.
