Watsonians Women and Western Men Strengthen their Hold at the Top of their Premierships
Most of the scheduled fixtures went ahead today, despite the wind and rain but four succumbed. At Auchenhowie, the game between Wildcats and Hillhead started and then, “it was 0-0 but only made it a few minutes into the second quarter until it was biblical rain.” end of game.
Watsonians stretched their lead at the top of the Women’s Premiership to three points after a 2-0 win at Grange, taking advantage of rivals Clydesdale Western’s day off. The scorers were Sarah Jamieson and Milly Berndes-Cade. That was Grange’s first reversal of the season.
In the logjam chasing pack below it was GHK who emerged to move up to third spot following a 2-0 win at St Andrews University with Lucy Williamson and Ella Ritchie getting the crucial goals.
The battle of the Universities Glasgow against Edinburgh as well as Uddingston v Gordonians were postponed.
Western Wildcats remain firmly in the driving seat after a convincing 5-2 win over champions Edinburgh University at Auchenhowie and they continued their predatory reputation in front of goal. Wildcats raced into a two goal lead early doors, Noordzij opened in only two minutes from a penalty corner, then Rob Harwood added a second four minutes later.
In the second half Fraser Moran made it three from another set piece before Keir Robb pulled one back for the students, but there was to be no comeback as Adam Mackenzie made it 4-1 almost immediately. A Sam Hunt penalty corner conversion made it 4-2 but Western Wildcats’ scoring was completed with five minutes remaining with a final strike by Fraser Moran to complete a good day at the office. However, the result pushes Edinburgh back to sixth in the table, making the defence of their title challenging.
Meanwhile Watsonians, also on a perfect record so far, climbed into second spot with a 5-3 win over Grange, leapfrogging over Uddingston whose game was postponed.
Grange’s Albert Rowing continued his good run of scoring form from penalty corners with a hat-trick of conversions, but it was not enough to halt Watsonians progress this season. Dean Schenck got a brace for Watsonians while the others came from Charlie Jack, Danny Cain and Harry Yarr. The result leaves Grange uncharacteristically second from bottom of the table.
ESM Lions roared into third spot, also leapfrogging Uddingston, after a 6-3 win over Inverleith, their fifth in a row. However, it was not always easy meat for the Lions, at half-time they were 2-1 adrift; Kyle Taylor scored twice for Inverleith, with Elliott Sandison replying for the Lions. Then it was 3-3 at the end of the third quarter, Taylor completed his hat-trick while Hamish Hepburn and Paddy Crookshanks added to ESM’s total. The Lions then got their claws into the game with further strikes from Cameron Ede, Alex Thomson and Jack Tweddle.
FSEG Clydesdale moved up to fifth after a 7-1 win at Dunfermline Carnegie who are having a torrid time after returning to the Premiership. Charlie Feeney scored twice for the Dale while the other strikes came from Matt Davidson, Andrew McGrane, Euan Anderson, Ethan Robertson and Luke Bannerman, Aidan McQuade replied for the Fifers
The fixtures between Uddingston and Hillhead along with Kelburne and Grove Menzieshill fell foul of the weather.
