Watsonians continue to flourish, Clydesdale get their first win, but Grange defeated
GRANGE 0 CAM 92 (FRANCE) 7
Grange`s chances of making top spot in a truncated pool competition evaporated in a 6-0 defeat at the hands of French side CAM 92 who now have full points from their two games so far. However, second spot and a bronze medal play-off on Monday is still on the cards but the Scots will need to see off Ukrainian side Vinnitsa to secure that position – a draw is no use on goal difference.
Bizarrely the first half was goalless and although both sides had chances the French clocked up five penalty corners without effect.
However, two minutes into the second half Tom Gaillard deflected home a penalty corner for the opener. Not long after Achille Loussif added a second from open play, and Grange were on the back foot.
The final quarter was a bit of a disaster for Grange as CAM pile on the goals through Louis Poupee with a direct shot at a penalty corner, Corentin Sellier, Gaillard again, Mathias Besier-Mercier and finally Timothee Clement.
Grange manager Martin Shepherdson had this to say. “The scoreline does not reflect the game. A very tight first half ended 0-0 with chances for both teams. In quarter three the French went 2-0 ahead although Grange remained well in contention, but as we pressed in the final quarter the French counter-attack play and ruthless finishing resulted in five goals being conceded. Grange continued to fight and created chances up to the final moments, but this was a very strong, very quick outfit that pressed us well and finished well.”
WATSONIANS 6 ROTWEISS WETTINGEN (SWITZERLAND) 0
Watsonians form continues to impress, today they were six goal winners over Swiss champions Rotweiss Wettingen in the second pool match at the Trophy tournament in Czechia…a total of 14 goals in the tournament so far and nothing conceded. Not a bad effort.
The Scottish champions top the pool with a three point lead and are heading for Monday`s final, but tomorrow they face French side Cambrai, who were 5-2 winners over host side Rakovnik, needing only a draw to reach the ultimate stage.
On today`s match Watsonians coach Keith Smith reflected. “I think we can really be happy with today. We knew Wettingen would be a tough challenge because they are well structured and would force us to be adaptable in possession. We dealt with that really well and the girls were able to solve the problems in the moment.
“Like yesterday, we had some good spells of build up play and counter attacking, but once again most pleasing was the defensive workrate – it set the platform for us to control the game, and allow us to dominate play.”
The catalyst was a hat-trick from Scotland striker Sarah Jamieson which set the Edinburgh side on their way to another comfortable victory.
And it was Sarah Jamieson who started the goals moving with a penalty corner conversion after only seven minutes., But it was the second quarter which rolled over the Swiss, started by Genevieve Hussell and Ailsa Small inside a minute, and then towards the end of the quarter Jamieson added two more for five at the interval.
The scoring abated in the second half although Watsonians had three further penalty corners, but with six minutes to go Millie Berndes-Cade notched a sixth from open play to complete the rout.
CLYDESDALE WESTERN 8 SWANSEA (WALES) 1
After yesterday`s disappointing result against Saint Germain Clydesdale Western bounced back in style with an 8-1 result over Swansea in the second pool match at Titwood in the EuroHockey Trophy 11 competition. The result pushes Clydesdale up to second in the table, a point ahead of Austrian side WAC but four points adrift of Saint Germain at the top.
The game was effectively over by the end of the first quarter, in seven minutes Ali Howie opened at a penalty corner, three minutes later the same player did the same, and then Emma McGregor added a third from open play – and all inside eleven minutes.
Before half-time Millie Steiger made it four – and that was game over.
A brief respite for Swansea early in the second half with a strike from Emily Haywood, but that failed to stop the Clydesdale bandwagon as the reply was further open play goals from Steiger again and Anna Winter for 6-1. In the final quarter Clydesdale increased the tally to eight with further strikes from Emma McGregor and Ciara Forgie – and that was it.
Tomorrow Clydesdale take on Austrian side WAC and it looks like that the result here will determine second place in the pool.
