Victory for Scotland over Ireland and a win for Wales in day three of the men’s 4-Nations
Scotland 2-1 Ireland
Scotland beat Ireland 2-1 through a tremendous late Jamie Golden winner in the men’s 4-Nations at Uddingston. The result means the two will meet again in tomorrow’s final at 1pm.
Ireland went 1-0 ahead early doors through a goal on the counter by John McKee. McKee skipped past the last Scotland defender and crashed the ball into the roof of the net.
Then Scotland settled into the contest and began to test Ireland down the left channel, but the green shirts at the back worked hard to prevent any clear openings.
Into the second quarter and a good save stopped an Ireland second after another slick counter attack.
Ireland had the ball in the net a short time later but it was ruled out for a back stick.
The second half saw Scotland continue to enjoy good possession but found the Irish defence in stubborn mood.
Then the momentum began to switch with Ireland pressing hard and causing problems. Jamie Golden did a sensational job of defending the post in a succession of Ireland penalty corners.
More bravery on the ball saw Scotland claw themselves back into the match and a brilliant attack down the left saw them find the net. Alan Forsyth equalised with a low rocket on the turn to make it 1-1.
The final quarter was a very tense affair, but the home crowd could smell a winner in the air.
A great weaving run by Lee Morton won a penalty corner for Scotland. Up stepped Jamie Golden who swung a sensational drag flick into the roof of the net to put Scotland 2-1 ahead in the final moments.
Wales 2-1 USA
Wales defeated USA 2-1 at the men’s 4-Nations in Uddingston through opening quarter goals by Gareth Furlong and Joseph Naughalty. The sides will meet again tomorrow at 11am in the 3rd / 4th place playoff.
It didn’t take Wales long to open the scoring and it came through a penalty corner. Gareth Furlong pinged a drag flick into the roof of the net to make it 1-0.
A few minutes later and Wales had the chance to go two ahead from the penalty spot. Joseph Naughalty stepped up and sunk the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0.
The Welsh were winning every ball through exceptional pressing and USA just couldn’t get out of their defensive shape.
The second quarter saw Wales continue to peg USA back but the Americans somehow survived the half without conceding more goals. Wales did come close through a Naughalty deflection but a tremendous diving save low to the left denied the goal.
Early in the third quarter Jack Pritchard looped a great opportunity to go three ahead over the bar, and it seemed to awaken the Americans.
Before long USA pulled one back. Aki Kaeppeler sent a drag flick into the right corner to pull it back to 2-1.
A valiant final quarter by the Americans couldn’t find an equaliser. Wales came close to putting the game to bed through a Furlong penalty corner but another great save low to the right meant a final result of 2-1 to Wales.
