Unlucky Scots edged out by Spain

Scotland women v Spain June 2016 4Challenge: Spain women 2 Scotland women 1 (San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante)

Lucy Camlin saved a penalty and produced two other brilliant stops as Scotland lost to Spain in Alicante, writes Nigel Duncan.

The Co Antrim-born stopper, who is studying at Edinburgh University and qualifies for Scotland under a three-year residency rule, was given the nod in this the final game of a four-match camp against Spain who are warming up for the Rio-based Olympic Games in August.

Scotland lost 2-1 on Friday but the first Spanish goal was highly-controversial and the hosts, who had won the three previous encounters, went 2-0 ahead in the second-half following a fine individual effort.

Birmingham University player Bex Condie netted Scotland’s counter half-way through the second-half to cut the deficit and Head Coach Gordon Shepherd was full of praise for his squad saying it was a tremendous performance.

Surbiton player Robyn Collins plus co-captain Kareena Marshall (Western Wildcats) and Amy Brodie (Edinburgh University) all sat this game, played in heat topping 30C, out.

Shepherd believes his squad have made great strides during the week in Spain and he said: “We did not pick our strongest team but the players who were out there today were outstanding. We were the better team and created lots of other chances but, again, we could not find the net.”

He added: “We instituted a fitness programme at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and this group are fitter than any Scotland women’s side has ever been. It was Spain who looked tired at the end of the game played in temperatures of around 31-32C and we have an incredibly fit squad.

“Special mention for Lucy Camlin. She saved a penalty and made two fantastic other saves and the whole squad have benefited greatly from this trip.”
