Underdogs day out

ARTHUR McKAY SCOTTISH CUP – QUARTER FINALS

Part of the magic of the cup is that it allows the
underdogs to take on the favourites with only a whiff of victory in
the air.

Dundee University, second in division 3, have done well to reach
the quarter-finals of the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup, but are
potential lambs to the slaughter against Western Wildcats from the
top flight  (Auchenhowie at 14.00), while Granite City
Wanderers from division 2 play hosts to Inverleith, third in the
first division.  (Aberdeen Sports Village at 13.30)

And what a reward awaits AAM Gordonians, leaders of the second
division and conquerors of first division Grove Menzieshill in the
previous round, a long trip to Bellahouston to face Glynhill
Kelburne, newly crowned champions for the eighth consecutive time,
yet to lose even a point this season, and the Paisley side have
notched over a hundred goals already in league games.
The occasion will give the Northerners a foretaste of life in the
top flight for next season, although any other side than Kelburne
might have given Gordonians an outside chance of an
upset.

The only all-first division tie brings together AMN Hillhead,
who are on a roll with four games undefeated, and second top
Grange.   But here again the omens are not good for an
upset, in an earlier league encounter the Edinburgh side an up an
11-2 win, although the one-off cup tie may be slightly closer.
(Jordanhill School at 14.25)

The women`s competition is a more egalitarian affair with an
all-first division line-up, and the possibility of an upset.
Although CALA Edinburgh and Western Wildcats are in the lower
reaches of the division, they might fancy their chances against
Giffnock and VWS Dundee Wanderers respectively  (Auchenhowie
at 12.00).     Holders Grove Menzieshill should
account for Kelburne on Tayside, but the champions have recently
been going through a rocky patch by their high standards.
(Riverside Park at 14.30)

The clash between Milne Craig Western and Edinburgh University
at Titwood is the tie of the round.  The sides lie second and
fourth respectively in the table, but Western have their noses in
front with 2-0 and 3-0 wins in the league competition.
But if the student`s player/coach Sam Judge, ironically a Western
players last season, can find the lethal touch that has brought 19
goals already this season, then the Western youngsters may find
themselves under some pressure  (Titwood at 12.00).
